When children are young, they are more at risk of having ear infections. In fact, it is quite common for children to have at least one ear infection before their first birthday. Ear infections are more common in children because of the way their ears develop. The tube in the ear that drains fluid (i.e., eustachian tube) is smaller and not tilted as much as it is in adults. Because of this horizontal position, it is easier for fluid to build up in the middle ear thereby increasing the risk of ear infections. It is also possible to get fluid in the middle ear that does not become an infection.
Hearing plays a critical role in learning language. Fluid in a child’s ear can make it harder for them to hear and can even cause a range of hearing loss. Repeated ear infections and fluid in the middle ear can therefore have a negative effect on speech and language development because it can affect the clarity of the speech they hear. It can be compared to listening to someone talk while underwater. Words may sound muffled, and some speech sounds may be very difficult to hear.
For this reason, we always recommending having a child’s hearing tested if you suspect a speech and/or language delay. Early identification and treatment of ear infections is important! Proper treatment of recurring ear infections or fluid in the ears can significantly improve a child’s speech and language delays.
