Understanding Toenail Onychomycosis: Types and Symptoms

Toenail onychomycosis is a common condition that foot care professionals encounter regularly. It is essential to have a comprehensive understanding of the different types of toenail onychomycosis and their associated symptoms. This article aims to provide valuable insights into these types and symptoms, helping foot care professionals provide effective care to their patients.

👣 Distal Subungual Onychomycosis (DSO): This is the most prevalent type of toenail onychomycosis. It typically starts at the distal end of the nail bed and causes discoloration, thickening, and brittleness of the nail. Patients may also experience nail separation and a foul odor.

👣 White Superficial Onychomycosis (WSO): WSO is characterized by white, powdery patches on the surface of the nail. It is less common than DSO and is caused by fungal invasion of the superficial layers of the nail plate. The affected nail may become soft, crumbly, and easily detachable.

👣 Proximal Subungual Onychomycosis (PSO): PSO is less prevalent and often associated with immunocompromised individuals. It starts at the proximal nail fold and progresses distally, resulting in nail discoloration, thickening, and nail plate separation.

👣 Candidal Onychomycosis: This type is caused by Candida species and commonly affects fingernails but can also occur in toenails. It is often seen in individuals who frequently immerse their hands or feet in water. Symptoms include nail thickening, discoloration, and nail plate separation.

By understanding the different types of toenail onychomycosis and their symptoms, foot care professionals can accurately diagnose and provide appropriate treatment options for their patients. Early detection and intervention are crucial in preventing the spread of the infection and promoting optimal foot health!
