💢 Getting a new injury can be scary!

Whether it’s a sprain, strain, or something more serious like a broken bone, knowing how to respond can make a difference in your recovery.

‼️ First, stop and assess the injury. Does it look swollen or bruised? Is it very painful? Are you able to walk on it? If the injury seems severe, seek medical advice!

🩹 When you sustain an injury, it’s important to protect the area. This may include limiting your activity levels, using mobility aids like crutches or a sling, and applying the POLICE method!

🏃🏻 Continue to monitor your symptoms to ensure the condition doesn’t worsen. Participating in physiotherapy early on during your recovery can promote healing and prevent further issues.

Let's talk about Infant Torticollis! 👶

💡Torticollis, aka "wryneck", can be congenital (from birth) or acquired. Infants with torticollis will act like other babies except when engaging in activities that require turning the head. The goal is to restore normal sternocleidomastoid (SCM) length to improve neck mobility.

Physiotherapy is a great option for infants with torticollis. 💪
Physiotherapists can provide:
- Stretching and strengthening exercises
- Advice on breastfeeding positions
- Advice on where to place toys during play time
- Advice on infant sleeping positions

Have more questions on torticollis and how to manage it? Ask your physiotherapist!

Did you know that the arm connects to the mid-back (aka the thoracic spine) indirectly through the collarbone and the shoulder blade? 🙋‍♂️

The movement and positioning of the arm is largely influenced by the thoracic spine. To achieve the last 10 degrees of shoulder flexion and abduction, the thoracic spine arches backwards. This allows for the shoulder to move more freely and achieve greater range of motion! 📏

💢 Having a hunched upper back or stiffness in the area can limit your shoulder range of motion. This can lead to compensatory movements that increase stress to the shoulder joint and surrounding structures.

💪 To maximize your shoulder mobility, you can:
1. Improve your thoracic spine mobility
2. Correct muscle imbalances
3. Become more aware of your everyday posture

Still have questions regarding shoulder range? Contact one of our clinics! We'd be happy to help.

🔆 Nerve flossing, also known as nerve gliding or neural mobilization, is a beneficial technique often used for individuals experiencing nerve compression or irritation.

📣 Like any other structure in the body, nerves need to glide smoothly through their surrounding tissues. When a nerve is compromised, it can lead to signs and symptoms such as pain, numbness, tingling, and impaired function.

💪 Nerve flossing exercises involve gentle, controlled movements designed to stretch and move the nerves between tissues. Each nerve requires specific movement patterns to effectively mobilize them. It's important to perform these exercises slowly without pushing through pain.

Wondering if nerve flossing would be beneficial for you in rehab? Talk to your physiotherapist!

💢 Shoulder dislocations are debilitating and often quite painful. When a shoulder dislocation occurs, the shoulder may look displaced, and you might find it difficult to move your arm. Swelling and bruising typically develop around the shoulder area, and some might experience numbness or tingling sensations.

💪Management can include repositioning the shoulder, immobilizing the shoulder joint, rehabilitation with physiotherapy, gradual return to activities/sports, and pain management. Surgery may be required if you have experienced recurrent dislocations.

📌 Things you can do to prevent a shoulder dislocation!
1. Strengthening the muscles around your shoulder joint is very important!
2. Use proper technique in activities and sports to reduce stressors on the shoulder.
3. Consider protective gear if involved in high-impact sports to help protect the shoulder from impact or excessive force.

Happy Friday everyone!! 🌿With August long weekend right around the corner, remember that taking time to rest and recover is well worth it.

While achieving your fitness goals is important, incorporating rest into your routine is equally essential. Allowing your body time to recover not only enhances your progress but also reduces the risk of injury. 📝

Taking adequate rest after exercising allows your tissues to recover and grow stronger. It also helps restore your energy levels and optimize performance! 💪

Lastly, rest isn’t just about physical recovery; it’s also vital for mental health. Continuous exercise without breaks can lead to burnout or decreased motivation. Taking some time off can rejuvenate your mental focus and enhance your motivation for working out. 🧘‍♂️

Incorporating rest days and active recovery (eg. light walking, yoga, light stretching) into your exercise regime is essential for maximizing your fitness progress and maintaining long-term health. 🚶‍♂️

Involved in a motor vehicle accident and experiencing whiplash? 💢

Whiplash associated disorder (WAD) refers to a range of signs and symptoms that arise following an injury to the neck, typically caused by a sudden jerking motion of the head. This often happens in rear-end collisions, but can also result from sports injuries, falls, and other accidents.

❗There are many components to recovery including physical, psychological, and social recovery. The timeline for recovery varies depending on the severity of your injury. Many people recover within a few weeks to a couple of months with appropriate care. Others may experience persistent symptoms or complications, requiring ongoing therapy and management.

Rehabilitation in physiotherapy may look like regaining range of motion, strength, flexibility, and function. Research shows that early initiation of physiotherapy can improve outcomes! 💪

🚗 Getting into an accident can be scary. A significant number of people may develop PTSD after an accident. Early psychological intervention can help address these psychological impacts.

👩‍⚕️ Recovery involves a multifaceted approach with various healthcare professionals. A tailored treatment plan will be developed based on your WAD classification and individual goals.

De Quervain's Tenosynovitis is a common wrist injury that many people suffer from! 👋

Common symptoms may include:
- Pain near the base of your thumb
- Swelling in the wrist
- Pain that worsens with activities involving pinching or gripping
- A "snapping" or "catching" sensation in the thumb

📝 For treatment, it's important to focus on decreasing the amount of pain and inflammation at the wrist. Activity modification is also key! For the parents, we know how difficult it may be to avoid activities involving your baby, but here are some suggestions to help modify your daily routine:
1. Share baby care duties with your partner or caregiver to reduce the stress on your wrist.
2. Use supportive devices (eg. a baby carrier or sling) to change your baby-holding technique.
3. Adjust feeding position and use pillows to support your arm and the baby.
4. Wear a wrist and thumb splint during daily activities to reduce the strain on the tendons.

Physiotherapy is also a great option to help strengthen the muscles around your wrist and improve functional abilities. They can offer advice and education on managing your symptoms while caring for your little one. 👩‍👦

Have you seen these words on your diagnostic imaging papers and wondered what these words even mean? 🤔 Many people get confused about which word means what simply because they have very similar spellings. However, there is one common thread among these three: they all relate to spinal health!

💡For possible treatment options, conservative management through physiotherapy can help strengthen surrounding muscles, improve flexibility, as well as providing postural education and activity management strategies. If these do not resolve the issue, surgery may be the next option.

Additionally, pain medication can be obtained from your family physician or local pharmacist. 💊

❓Did you know that some people can be asymptomatic and unaware they have spondylosis, spondylolysis, or spondylolisthesis? Sometimes, these conditions are discovered incidentally during diagnostic imaging for an unrelated issue!

Have one of these spinal conditions or want to know more? Ask one of our physios!!

Is cross training beneficial? The answer is YES!! Cross training refers to the practice of engaging in different types of exercises/activities to enhance overall fitness! It is suitable for people of all ages and can be tailored based on goals and preferences. 🚴‍♂️🏌️‍♂️🏊‍♂️🏃‍♂️

Oftentimes, you'll hear physiotherapists encouraging you to participate in cross training. But what does this really mean? Rather than focusing exclusively on running or weightlifting, cross training adds in other strength training 🏋️‍♂️, flexibility training 🤸‍♂️, cardiovascular exercises 💓, balance and coordination exercises 🧘‍♂️, and sport-specific training ⛹️‍♂️ into your exercise regime.

The primary goal of cross training is to achieve a well-rounded level of fitness that can help reduce the risk of injuries, improve overall performance, and maintain motivation.

Heat or Ice? What do you think? 🤔

💧Ice application is typically recommended within the first 48 hours after an injury occurs. With cold therapy, it works to constrict the blood vessels and reduce blood flow to the injured area. This helps to reduce swelling and inflammation, which are common responses after a sprain, strain, or bruise. When applying ice, always have a towel or cloth between you and the ice to avoid an ice burn. It's recommended to ice for 15 minutes per time.

🔥Heat application can be used for chronic injuries or injuries that have surpassed the 48 hour period. It's important to note that heat should NOT be applied during the first 48 hours after an injury, as it can increase swelling in the area. It's recommended to apply heat for 15-20 minutes per time. Make sure the heat therapy is moderately hot in temperature to avoid any burns!

When choosing between heat and ice, it's important to consider if you have an acute injury or not. If you do not have an acute injury, then the decision to choose ice or heat is determined based on your preference. Remember to listen to your body!

🧦Compression stockings offer significant benefits for various groups of people, including those with medical conditions, individuals at risk of circulatory complications, athletes, and people in occupations that involve prolonged periods of sitting or standing.

Compression stockings apply gentle pressure to the superficial veins of the legs in a graduated manner, with the greatest pressure at the ankles that gradually decreases as it moves up the leg. This helps to promote blood flow back to the heart and prevent pooling of blood in the legs! 🦵

There are many different types and sizes of compression stockings. If you are interested in getting a pair for yourself, many healthcare professionals are trained to perform the measurement. 📏

Still wondering if compression stockings are beneficial for you? Contact our clinic and we'd be happy to answer any questions you may have.
