On Thursday, February 19, the boys at Cassidy Lake spent the day skiing at Poley Mountain in Sussex, NB. 🎿

Beyond the slopes, the day was about so much more than skiing.
Outdoor activities like this play an important role in the recovery journey.

Stepping outside of daily routines, facing new challenges, and supporting one another on the hill helps build confidence, resilience, and healthy interdependence.

Recovery isn’t only about individual strength — it’s also about learning to rely on others in positive, supportive ways. Whether it was encouraging a peer at the top of a run or celebrating small victories at the bottom of the hill, the day was filled with moments of connection and growth.

Fresh air, movement, teamwork, and shared experiences continue to strengthen the sense of community at Cassidy Lake — one day, one run, at a time. 💙

🦋 Metamorphosis Day at Portage Atlantic

Today we celebrate Metamorphosis Day at Portage Atlantic.

The day began with a morning group focused on “Metamorphosis Day” and “What Portage Means to Me.”

Several staff members shared their own recovery journeys and the profound impact Portage has had on their lives — powerful reminders that transformation is possible.

At lunch, we celebrated together with a beautifully decorated cake, marking not only personal growth but our shared community.
In the afternoon, things got competitive with Portage Jeopardy — girls vs. boys!
Based on the final score… we’re not entirely sure there was a clear winner though! 😉

Tonight, during Night Meeting, residents will reflect on one simple but meaningful question:
“How has Portage changed your life?”

Because Metamorphosis Day isn’t just about looking back —
it’s about recognizing growth, celebrating progress, and continuing the journey forward.

🔗 Testimonial | Post-care follow-up: staying engaged in recovery

“Post-care follow-up helps me stay in action.”

At the Quebec Day Centre, Kentin shares his journey and the crucial role post-care follow-up played in his recovery. This ongoing support helps maintain the progress made in therapy, sustain abstinence, and remain actively engaged in the recovery process while reintegrating into everyday life.

This testimonial highlights the essential role of Portage Québec’s teams and post-care services in supporting long-term recovery and social reintegration.

The 5 Stages of Change

Change doesn’t happen in a single step. It unfolds through a progressive process, widely recognized in psychosocial intervention and addiction treatment.

At Portage, these stages are an integral part of the therapeutic approach and guide the support offered to youth and their loved ones.
1. Precontemplation
The person does not yet see their substance use as a problem.
Intervention focuses mainly on providing information, building trust, and reducing resistance.
2. Contemplation
The person begins to question themselves: “Is this harming me?”
Ambivalence, doubts, and moments of awareness emerge.
3. Preparation
The intention to change becomes clearer.
The person explores their options, resources, and possible forms of help.
4. Action
Concrete changes are put in place: entering treatment, modifying behaviors, and actively engaging in the process.
5. Maintenance
The goal is to consolidate progress, prevent relapse, and support reintegration into daily life.

Why this is important to understand (especially for parents)
👉 Not everyone is at the same stage at the same time
👉 Pushing someone too quickly into the next stage can create resistance
👉 Adapting support to the person’s actual stage increases the chances of lasting change

At Portage, support aims to meet the person where they are, with structure, compassion, and clinical consistency.

Meet our staff | Casandra
Counsellor – Youth & Young Adults

Hi, I’m Casandra, and I’m thrilled to be part of the Community Care Program, supporting youth and families.

Before joining Portage, I worked extensively with adults experiencing homelessness and substance use disorders for five years. I was part of a local organization that operated a safe consumption site, where I witnessed firsthand the realities of drug use, responded to overdoses, and managed harm reduction supplies to support safer practices in the community.

As a trained Medical First Responder, I’ve seen individuals affected by trauma - big and small - and witnessed the strength and change that healing can bring.

I also served as a team lead for a Public Health Agency of Canada program that raised awareness about the stigma and risks associated with STBBIs, collaborating closely with community partners to create meaningful change.

Witnessing the challenges this marginalized population faces every day and getting to know them on such a personal level has profoundly shaped how I see the world.

I’m currently completing my Master’s in Counselling Psychology at Yorkville University. My future counselling approach will be rooted in Trauma-Informed Integrative Counselling, with a focus on healing trauma, emotional regulation, and building adaptive coping strategies.

Outside of work, I’m happily married and share my life with a dog who truly runs the show. I love to read and maintain an active lifestyle, whether it’s hitting the gym, hiking, practicing yoga, or taking long walks with my pup.

I’m excited to bring my experience, empathy, and passion to this role, supporting youth and families as they navigate challenges and work toward growth and wellness.

À la rencontre de notre équipe | Casandra
Intervenante – Adolescents & jeunes adultes

"🎭 Stylized content. Minimized risk. Real danger.

Drug sales on social media don’t always look dangerous.
They’re often presented as normal, trendy, and harmless — which is exactly what makes them risky.

Here’s what’s really happening:

1️⃣ The phenomenon is normalized
Many youth see this content as part of everyday online culture.

2️⃣ The content is intentionally stylized
Visuals, codes, and language are designed to minimize perceived harm.

3️⃣ The risks aren’t always recognized
Adulterated substances, overdose, and the possible presence of fentanyl are often underestimated.

👉 This is exactly what we break down in our upcoming webinar.
