WHY TWO MINUTES TWICE PER DAY?
It is important to brush for the full two minutes so that you can be sure you have removed any food and plaque that has built up on your teeth since your last brushing. The bacteria in plaque feed on the sugars found in our food, so removing both food and plaque is imperative for preventing tartar buildup. Tartar causes permanent tooth decay and gum disease (such as gingivitis and periodontitis) and is difficult to remove on your own. Spending two minutes brushing is a little bit of work with a huge payoff.

National Sunscreen Day is a celebration of the power of sunscreen and a way of raising awareness about its importance. Sunscreen can protect our skin from harmful UV rays that the sun emits. This allows us to stay in the sun longer and enjoy hot days without fear. The effects of the hole in the ozone layer are being felt now more than ever and this makes sunscreen an essential outdoor item. The day calls attention to this fact and encourages everyone to wear sunscreen when spending time outside.

The history of National Sunscreen Day is somewhat of a mystery however the history of sunscreen itself is more clear. The Australian, Milton Blake invented sunscreen in the 1930s after 12 years of experimentation carried out mostly in his kitchen. Since this initial invention, sunscreen has come a long way most notably with the invention of the Sun Protection Factor (SPF). This was invented by Franz Greiter who was a chemistry student at the time in his home country of Switzerland. Greiter was sunburnt after a hike and wanted to improve the quality of sunscreen available on the market. To achieve this he created SPF to verify the performance of sunscreen.

Today the importance and protective power of sunscreen is widely recognized as well as the harmful effects of the sun. National Sunscreen Day celebrates the history of the product in addition to raising awareness about its necessity. Climate change and other factors have made sun protection absolutely essential. Spending extended periods of time in the sun without sunscreen is a health hazard. The sun can have many negative effects on the skin with the worst of these being cancer. That is why sun protection like sunscreen is so essential.

How to brush your teeth

Step 1
Brush at a 45 degree angle to your teeth. Direct the bristles to where your gums and teeth meet. Use a gentle, circular, massaging motion, up and down. Don’t scrub. Gums that recede visibly are often a result of years of brushing too hard.

Step 2
Clean every surface of every tooth. The chewing surface, the cheek side, and the tongue side.

Step 3
Don’t rush your brush. A thorough brushing should take at least two to three minutes. Try timing yourself.

Step 4
Change your usual brushing pattern. Most people brush their teeth the same way all the time. That means they miss the same spots all the time. Try reversing your usual pattern.

Step 5
Use a soft brush with rounded bristles. The right toothbrush cleans better. Choose a size and shape that allow you to reach all the way to your back teeth. There are many different types of brushes. Our hygienists can suggest the best one for you. Dr Bensimon recommends you replace your toothbrush every three months.
