We often find that we have lower tolerance for our lives when we eliminate caffeine.  

This is because caffeine breaks our boundaries by stimulating us through situations we wouldn’t have the energy or tolerance for otherwise.  

Our exhaustion, depression, and desire for rest are all perfect responses when we’ve gone beyond our capacity and even when we are in situations that aren’t healthy for us.  

Caffeine adrenalizes us out of that state.  

We are given a temporary stimulus which helps us bypass the part of us that says “enough”.  

I’m not shaming anyone for this. There are plenty of good reasons why we do this to survive. 

A single parent working full-time, a caregiver, someone who has to interact with lots of people for a paycheck - these are smart reasons to stimulate our bodies for survival. 

There’s also the very real state of depression. Caffeine can help a depressed body mobilize into action. Same with someone who has ADHD.  

What I’m bringing attention to is that you can’t expect yourself to deeply heal trauma & anxiety when you’re stimulating your body with caffeine through the day. 

Caffeine prompts the release of adrenaline & adrenaline turns on our trauma responses. 

If you’re not at a point in your life where you’re able to cut back or eliminate, just be with the parts of you that wish they could pause or rest.  

Show them you see them, feel them, and understand them. Maybe on weekends or times off you can tend to the parts that get bypassed by stimulation. 

Notice when you reach for caffeine and how it helps you get through something that would, otherwise, be physically exhausting and difficult.

I like to help folks hone their interoception skills dynamically (through movement and breathing) and in a quiet, peaceful environment so that there’s space to “listen” to the body. I like this format because it helps folks stay grounded while they explore sensation and integrate their experience of that sensation.

Grief is trauma and trauma is grief. The journey to heal, recover, reconnect, reclaim, whatever it may be, can be extremely challenging. I often have people ask me if I think it’s possible to truly heal from trauma. This graphic best illustrates how I feel about it. I don’t think what you experienced will ever go away per se but I think you can grown and flourish around it, creating a life that is meaningful to you. Your grief and trauma will shrink in comparison to what you have built. I hope that this is as soothing to you as it is to me.

The f**kery of the past few days is triggering on a myriad of levels.

Anywhere CHOICES are absent, trauma is likely to be present.

If you are experiencing panic, depression, dissociation, overwhelm, burnout or anger right now, YOU MAKE SENSE.

Sometimes what the mental health world calls a disorder or a “personal issue” is a reasonable response to an unsafe environment, systemic racism, or the subjugation of your body.

There is NO such thing as a “crazy” person. Symptoms make sense in context (even if we don’t always know the context).

Thomas Stephen Szasz says, “Insanity is the only sane reaction to an insane society.”

Psychiatrist R.D. Laing said, “Insanity is a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world.”
