Hello, my name is Philip Kemp, and I am a qualified Humanistic counsellor and psychotherapist and individual member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), working within the high standards of their ethical framework necessary for the integrity and ethical rigour of my work. I hold a BA (Hons) in Counselling as well as an enhanced DBS certificate and professional indemnity insurance, both integral to working with vulnerable adults and children. Through my work at The Outhouse and Essex CRC, I have accrued over 100 hours of clinical experience, facilitating both face-to-face and remote counselling sessions for adult service users from the criminal justice system and the LGBTQ+ community. This work has offered me the opportunity to work with a variety of clients, addressing issues such as abuse, anxiety, depression, domestic violence, gender dysphoria, self-harm and su***de ideation to name a few. I currently work as a counsellor for HBBS Counselling, as well as operating my private practice from my home in Brentwood. I am dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the quality of my work, attending regular clinical supervision and continuing to develop my practice through further training and research.

A restful New Year to you all! πŸŽ‰πŸŽŠβœ¨

I'm often asked what it means to be a therapist. What role do I play? My answer is that I am an imperfectly human human being accompanying someone on their journey to answer for themselves - what does it mean to be human?

Often, the purpose of life is considered akin to the goals of therapy - to find happiness. Whilst admirable, I don't think either are true.

Life invites challenges as well as joys, heartbreaks as well as successes. I ask you, reader, are you as attentive to your anger, your shame and your despair as you are to your elation, your joy?

From my perspective, the purpose of therapy, a purpose that has implications for life itself, is to make peace with all of our emotions, however disquieting or alarming. They may be saying something important. This poem by Rumi communicates this message clearly and beautifully.

In this new year, if you, or someone you know, may benefit from opening up the guest house we all hold, please get in touch 😊

As restrictions ease and our every day begins to show glimpses of life pre-COVID, I feel like this article is a pressing reminder of the remarkable strength shown in the face of the pandemic.

While the pandemic was an unprecedented and often tragic event, I believe it is a microcosm of the resilience present within all human beings.

You all have a fire within you. Celebrate it.

This research briefing looks at resilience across the UK during the coronavirus pandemic and how people are coping.

"The curious paradox is that when I accept myself as I am, then I change. I believe that I have learned this from my clients as well as within my own experience that we cannot change, we cannot move away from what we are until we thoroughly accept what we are. Then change seems to come about almost unnoticed"

An excellent article encapsulating one of my most fundamental beliefs about human beings: our capacity to survive and thrive in the face of adversity.

Whether it's humour in response to hardship, or simply carrying on to the best of one's ability, resilience takes many forms. It is part of our nature, individually and collectively.

I feel honoured to be a part of a profession that constantly exposes me to this, one of humanity's greatest gifts.

I hope you reflect on your own challenges and come to discover what is an undeniable fact: you are stronger than you think ❀

When we face adversity, misfortune, or frustration resilience helps us bounce back. But that’s not all. Learn about Resilience Theory in a little more depth
