After all the furore about the Dragons’ Den and ear seeds, here is some sane information on ear (aricular) acupuncture. The British Acupuncture Council sets the highest standards of professional practice for the acupuncture profession in the UK.

▫ Our BAcC Code of Professional Conduct sets out members’ professional obligations and expected standards of professional behaviour.

▫ The BAcC Code of Safe Practice for Acupuncture defines the standards for the safe and hygienic practice of acupuncture.

▫ The BAcC Code of Disciplinary Procedures outlines the process for dealing with complaints against those who are, or have recently been on the membership register of the British Acupuncture Council.

▫ Additionally, the BAcC Standards of Practice for Acupuncture reflect the artistry of professional practice expected of an experienced BAcC Member.

▫ The BAcC Educational Standards represent an agreed core of professional knowledge and understanding, attitudes, values and skills approved by the BAcC, and describe the educational and clinical outcomes required to meet the entry requirements for professional membership. All of our members are highly trained and qualify with a minimum of three years of training.

These standards and codes, alongside our Professional Standards Authority accreditation, ensure that BAcC practitioners offer their patients the highest standard of professional care during their acupuncture treatment.

Here is some general information about what to expect from a session with a professional acupuncturist.

What will happen when I go for acupuncture?

We know that, for some, the idea of that initial appointment can be a little daunting. Trying anything unknown can cause apprehension but you’ve done it, you’ve contacted your local BAcC practitioner for that initial appointment – so, what can you expect?

Traditional treatment is based on a thorough consultation – an holistic overview of your health, lifestyle and any other contributing factors such as diet.

A BAcC acupuncturist will take your medical history, read your pulse, may examine the site of your symptoms, and may look at your tongue. Your individual treatment plan will be based on your current health and lifestyle, and your acupuncturist will decide which combination of points is right for your whole body, as well as your symptoms.

Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system used in the East for over 2,000 years. Acupuncture adopts an holistic approach to healthcare, considering the mind and body as one, and is based on the idea that a blockage or disturbance in the flow of ‘qi’ (a concept from Chinese philosophy), can cause health issues. Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) theory views pain and illness as an indication that the body is out of balance.

Sometimes, people choose acupuncture even though they have no obvious symptoms. Some choose to have regular treatment because they find it beneficial and relaxing, especially if they lead a very stressful life. Often, people turn to acupuncture to take back control of their health, whilst others want to understand their body in a deeper way, wanting to look after their body, mind and soul.
