Can I ask you something?

Have you ever said to yourself or heard someone you love say

"I've tried so many times. Maybe this is just who I am"?

That sentence. That defeated little sentence.

Here's what I want you to know.

Nobody is born a smoker.

Nobody is born an addict or a drinker.

That behaviour was learned through stress, circumstances, time, and a brain that was simply trying to help.

It found something that worked, for a while, and made it automatic.
But what was learned can also be unlearned.

Not through willpower.

Not through trying harder or wanting it more.

But by going to the level where the habit actually lives in the unconscious mind and making a different decision there.

I've written a new blog about exactly this, using the most unlikely of guides, Alice in Wonderland.

Because Alice understood something about identity that I come back to again and again in my work.

"It's no use going back to yesterday, because I was a different person then."

Yesterday's version of you, the one defined by the habit, doesn't have to come into today.

Today you are already someone different.

If this speaks to you, or to someone you love, the full blog is on my website. Link in the comments.

And if you'd like a conversation, no pressure, no obligation, I offer a free 45-minute consultation.

Just a chat. 🍵

Most people wait until their mind completely breaks down before they act.

It’s a bit like waiting for your car to fail on the motorway before calling the AA or RAC. Of course, they’ll come and help… but wouldn’t it be better to look after the car before it breaks down?

When you work on your mindset, it’s the same. With just a few sessions, you can build your own inner AA or RAC — always ready to step in, steady things, and get you moving forward again.

👉 Don’t wait until you’re stuck. Build your inner rescue team now.

The Thought Before the Storm

Sometimes it’s not the event.
It’s not even the moment.

It’s the micro-thought that came just before it.

The one you didn’t hear — but your body did.

Like:
– “What if I mess this up?”
– “They won’t like me.”
– “I always get this wrong.”

You don’t even realise you’ve thought it.
But your nervous system catches it — and goes on high alert.

That’s why someone can look calm on the outside
while inside, everything feels tight, unsettled, or on edge.

💡 Today’s nudge:
Notice the moment before the reaction.
The quiet voice that repeats an old belief.

Because once you catch it, it starts to lose its grip.
And that’s where change begins.

Your mind isn’t always giving you new information.

Sometimes… it’s just rearranging the same information in a way that feels more threatening.

Like a kaleidoscope.

You turn it slightly… and the whole picture changes.
Same pieces. Different pattern.

When anxiety is high, it can look like something is wrong…
when actually nothing has changed except the angle you’re looking from.

Most people try to fight the thought.
But that keeps you stuck in the same pattern.

The shift comes from changing the lens… not arguing with what you see.

So next time your mind jumps to the worst case, pause and ask:

What happens if I turn this slightly?

Same situation.
Different experience.

Another one! 🎉

Dan came to me having tried to stop smoking more times than he could count. Sound familiar?

What changed this time? We worked with his unconscious mind to shift the pattern at the root, rather than just relying on willpower.

His words say it better than I ever could:
"Stopping smoking has been my biggest challenge for years now with many failed attempts. Your personalised methods and the structure of the process has helped me stop quite easily actually, which has been amazing."

If you've tried everything and nothing has stuck, this is worth a conversation. Drop me a message and let's chat. đź’ś

You can’t logic your way out of a survival response.

You already know it’s safe.
But your body still reacts like it’s not.

This is what happens when the unconscious mind is still running a survival script.
You can’t logic your way out of it—
But you can rewire it.

Have you ever read a message twice and immediately think something is wrong?

Or you say something in a conversation and spend the next hour replaying it?

Your mind isn't trying to make you miserable. It's trying to protect you.

But sometimes that protective instinct gets stuck, and what starts as a small uncertainty turns into a full spiral of worst case scenarios.

I've just written a blog about exactly this pattern, about why it happens, why telling yourself "it'll be fine" rarely works for long, and what actually helps.

It's one of the things I work with most in my Cheltenham practice and online across the UK, and once people understand why their mind does this, something often shifts.

The Comfort Gremlin shows up when life feels heavy.
It says:
“Have something to eat — you’ll feel better.”
“Pour a drink — it’ll take the edge off.”
“Distract yourself — you deserve it.”

In the moment, it feels soothing. But long-term, it can become the very thing that keeps you stuck.

The Comfort Gremlin isn’t your enemy. It’s trying to protect you from pain — it just doesn’t realise there are better ways to find comfort that leave you stronger instead of drained.

At Phoenix Hypnotherapy in Cheltenham, Gloucester, and surrounding areas, I help people retrain the Comfort Gremlin — giving it a new role that supports real calm, resilience, and freedom.

It started with a single thought —
“What if I fail?” — and straight away the whole body reacted.

The tight chest.
The shallow breath.
The restless night that followed.

That’s when it clicked:
It wasn’t “just in head.”
The body is always listening.

The moment you began changing your relationship with those thoughts, something shifts.
The signals soften.
The body starts to calm.

Because every thought is a message — and the body hears them all.

A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor

Calm waters are comfortable, but they don’t teach you much.

It’s the storms that make you stronger.

Every challenge you’ve faced has taught you something about who you are and what you can handle.

You might not have chosen the waves, but you’ve learned how to navigate them.

And that skill — that strength — will carry you further than you think.

You teach people how to treat you by what you allow

Boundaries aren’t selfish — they’re essential.
Every time you accept behaviour that makes you feel small, you silently tell the world it’s okay.
The truth is, you set the standard for how others treat you.
When you start raising that standard, everything changes — the people you attract, the respect you receive, and the way you feel about yourself.
