Thalassaemia is a rare genetic blood disorder that affects how the body produces haemoglobin (which carries oxygen around the body). It can often lead to severe anaemia.
This mainly affects people of Mediterranean, south Asian, southeast Asian and Middle Eastern origin. It can impact daily life and, in some cases, be life-threatening. Many people living with thalassaemia need blood transfusions to treat and prevent anaemia; in severe cases, blood transfusions are needed around once a month.
Your blood donations can make a real difference to those in need. To help us treat thousands of people living with thalassaemia, visit www.blood.co.uk to donate blood now 🩸
