CALLING ALL MEN…CHECK YOUR TE**ES!

Self-examining yourself once a month helps you get to know what’s normal for you, detect any changes and notice any abnormalities.

👉🏼To do this, stand in front of a mirror and look for any swelling or changes in size.
👉🏼Usually best to do this this after a warm shower.
👉🏼Then, use both hands to gently roll each testicle between your fingers.
👉🏼Feel for any lumps or bumps, which may indicate a problem.
👉🏼If you notice any changes, it is important to contact your doctor for further examinations and investigations.

What is a uroflow?

If you have a urology appointment which includes a uroflow test, this is a simple test where you will be asked to urinate into a special machine that measures the speed and volume of your urine flow, in a private toilet cubicle. Your Urology Consultant will use the results of the test to diagnose any urinary problems you may have.

What do I need to do to prepare for my appointment?

Your bladder will need to feel fairly full and you must feel that you really need to pass urine to ensure that you produce a flow that the machine can measure, so please ensure you arrive with a full bladder.

WHAT TO EXPECT AT A FLEXIBLE CYSTOSCOPY APPOINTMENT

➡️ Mr Eaton explains what happens at a flexible cystoscopy appointment. You will have a thin, flexible tube with a camera on the end inserted into your bladder via your urethra. The doctor will use the camera to examine the inside of your bladder. You may experience some discomfort during the procedure, but it should not be painful and often, the thought of it is much worse that the procedure itself. A flexible cystoscopy usually takes no more than 10-15 minutes and will be done in an outpatient setting. At The Shire Clinics Urology Clinic you receive your results on the same day.

❓What is a TURP?

In our last post, we outlined treatment options for BPH. At The Shire Clinics, we advise on lifestyle changes and medications required to help treat this. If you require surgery – transurethral resection of the prostate, our surgeons can organise this and would perform it themselves at the Nuffield Cheltenham, ensuring total continuity throughout your treatment.

TURP is short for transurethral resection of the prostate. It is a surgical procedure used to treat an enlarged prostate. It removes excess prostate tissue to reduce the size of the prostate gland through the urethra. It will help to relieve urinary symptoms associated with an enlarged prostate.

Double voiding is when you finish urinating, wait for a few moments after you’ve finished before trying to go again. If you suffer from urinary symptoms and have had more serious issues ruled out, double voiding can be helpful. It can help you empty your bladder properly and help reduce urinary frequency. If you have no urinary symptoms and good voiding habits, there is no need to do this.

Benefits of drinking plenty of water

There are so many benefits to drinking enough water on a regular basis. Urology health included, but there are lots of others too:

1. Drinking plenty of water helps to keep the body hydrated and functioning properly.
2. It helps to flush out toxins from the body, aiding in digestion and preventing constipation.
3. It is great for urological health and helps prevent urine infections.
4. It can help to reduce headaches and fatigue.
5. It can help to boost the immune system and reduce the risk of certain illnesses.
6. It can help to reduce hunger and cravings.
7. It helps to regulate body temperature and maintain healthy skin.
8. It can help to improve physical performance and mental alertness.

Try and drink little and often throughout the day.
