After a long break to care for my mum who is suffering with Alzheimers disease, I will be counselling again next month. This journey as a carer has taught me many things about the human spirit. Being present in the moment; making the best of the day rather than living in the past or the future has given me the patience and understanding to accept my mum's journey and my life with her in this new reality we have found ourselves in. It's a difficult journey but like every tough part of life you have choices of how you will react and often your not sure what you can cope with until you have to face it head on. I'm one of the lucky carer's in that I get to have breaks, some people I know don't have that luxury. Learning about this horrible disease and how it impacts our loved ones and all involved in a caring role has given me a greater understanding of the human spirit.
