The Vagus Nerve is a deep long wandering cranial nerve that runs from the back of the skull, through the throat, chest and fans out in the gut. Aka: the Gut Brain.
It basically controls your nervous system. Think of it as a very sensitive inner alarm network that picks up signals when things are safe or not.
Those tiny, no-big-deal everyday stresses are part of life yes but if you ignore them, let them accumulate and have a lifestyle that exacerbates them, then this creates a constant sense of danger in the body = little alarm bells 🔔
Over time, because you’ve deemed them “no-big-deal” stressors, it starts to feel normal and creates a false alarm effect, the vagus gets stuck in a “glitch”, forgetting how to switch from danger mode into safe mode.
Hello IBS, palpitations, anxiety, fat storage, hormone imbalances, poor sleep, hypervigilance, burnout = poor vagal tone.
How to fix the glitch?
Forcing a “jump start” in your body - we need to innervate and stimulate that vagus nerve using:
- Cold water therapy
- Diaphragmatic breathing
- Yin yoga
- Singing/humming/gargling
- Reflexology (it works on thousands of nerve endings!)
Remember: no amount of healthy diet, exercise or even therapy will work as effectively if your nervous system is stuck in danger mode 🆘
Let’s get your body to feel safe and homeostasis (aka the body’s natural state of balance) will do the rest. Does this resonate, are you ignoring alarm bells? 🔔
