Can you help?

We’re supporting Miriam, a final-year Occupational Therapy student at the University of Gloucestershire, who is completing her research project in collaboration with Astor Bannerman.

Miriam is looking to speak with families of children with physical disabilities to better understand lived experiences around personal care at home (such as bathing) and participation in school (including changing, toileting and personal care).

This research aims to help inform how occupational therapists and equipment designers can better support children, families and schools in meaningful, practical ways.

Participation is entirely voluntary, confidential and ethically approved.

If you would be happy to take part — or know someone who may be interested, please email miriam.cowling@astorbannerman.co.uk

Thank you for helping ensure lived experience shapes future support 💙

💜 It’s Purple Tuesday! 💜

Today we’re celebrating accessibility and inclusion for everyone.

The Purple Pound — the spending power of disabled people and their families — is worth over £274 billion every year in the UK. Yet so many spaces still aren’t fully accessible.

That’s why days like today matter. We’re proud to support greater accessibility through Changing Places facilities and beyond, helping to create spaces that promote dignity, independence and inclusion for all.

New Guide: Making Schools More Inclusive for Every Child 🏫

Every child deserves access to safe, dignified hygiene facilities at school - and we want to make it easier for families, schools and professionals to make that happen.

We’ve created a new free Hygiene Room Guide, designed to help you understand what a hygiene room is, why it’s important, and how to plan, fund and design one that meets every student’s needs.

Inside the guide you’ll find:

- What a Hygiene Room is and who it’s for
- Key design and equipment advice
- How to meet regulations and get funding
- Real stories from schools who’ve already made changes

There’s also an Easy Read version - with clear text and images - so students, families and disabled people can be part of the planning process too.

We’re so proud to have been part of something truly special 💙

In the latest episode of DIY SOS, the team transformed the home of eight-year-old Raffi in Bracknell - helping him return home from hospital after a long recovery from E. coli.

With support from more than 600 volunteers, the house was completely redesigned to meet Raffi’s needs - including an Astor Kiva height-adjustable bath with a Neatfold stretcher, donated by us at Astor Bannerman.

Raffi’s dad said the transformation has “changed their lives” and that Raffi’s recovery has been “massive” since moving back home.

We’re honoured to have played a small part in Raffi’s journey - and to see how accessible spaces can make such a difference to children and families every day.

In 1996, Astor Bannerman was challenged by Muscular Dystrophy UK to design a height-adjustable wash basin to support independence for people with complex disabilities.

The result? The ABW Wash Basin – a breakthrough product that not only transformed accessibility but also became key to our company’s growth.

Nearly 30 years on, our R&D team continues to evolve the ABW, keeping it at the forefront of innovation in inclusive design.

Planning a bathroom adaptation? Wondering who’s meant to do what?

You’re not alone! A DFG-funded adaptation can feel like a maze of OTs, surveyors, builders, and suppliers. It can be confusing to know who’s responsible for each step.

That’s why planning ahead is so important. Thinking about future needs - like space for a hoist, or wiring for equipment you might need later - can save you stress (and money!) down the line.

Our free Family Guide to Bathroom Adaptations explains:

✅ Who does what during the process
✅ What you should expect at each stage
✅ How to plan for both today and tomorrow
