๐Ÿ‘ทThe whole team had a great couple of days learning all about how to build a dry stone wall, in the beautiful environs of the Bathurst Estate, close to the village of Coates, near Cirencester. It was wonderful to play a small part in repairing a section of these iconic walls, which heavily define our beautiful Cotswold landscape. And to learn a traditional craft and have a wonderful time together in the process.

๐Ÿ‘ A huge thank you to Andrew (Andy) Docherty, who navigated us through the process.

โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿฉน Andy, who is an ex-military veteran, founded Walling2Recovery to support the mental wellbeing and mindfulness of military and blue-light veterans. While the walling events support the physical and mental recovery of veterans, they also help facilitate their transition into civilian employment within the rural sector. Andy hopes that now their skills have developed in this profession, veterans will be able to run dry stone walling events in different parts of the country on his behalf and continue to restore these magnificent, picturesque and valuable structures.

๐Ÿ™Œ We highly recommend this activity for any team who is looking to step away from their desk for a day or two to enjoy a new skill while supporting a worthy cause!

McLoughlin Planning is delighted to have obtained planning permission for a new modern and well-adapted leisure centre in the area of Sandwell.

The overall approved scheme will help contribute to the investment of Sandwell's health and leisure facility infrastructure. For instance, with this new development being well designed by Architects, it has allowed for increased access to sport and recreation facilities, including to support those with additional needs. Heritage assets and the surrounding residential amenity were also taken into consideration to ensure there was no detrimental impact and that the new scheme would help complement the appearance of the existing street scene.

It was an absolute pleasure to be involved in this scheme, and we are so pleased with the positive outcome for our client. โญ๏ธ The lovely and vibrant Caroline joined McLoughlin Planning when we acquired back in May 2024 and since taking on the role as Head of Business Development, she has excelled and progressed in the Company extremely well in terms of helping to manage business decisions, track lead generation, ensuring client satifaction and taking charge in our marketing department. It has been great to see how far she has progressed since working with us. She has also worked closely and been a mentor to our Business Development Assistant, Elle Jones, on an array of different areas of work to help support and develop the business. ๐™†๐™š๐™ฎ ๐™ฉ๐™–๐™ ๐™š๐™–๐™ฌ๐™–๐™ฎ๐™จ:

+ The importance of understanding access arrangements in feeding into the proposed on-site infrastructure and potential layout (i.e. capacity, type of movement, impact on the surrounding context).

+ Taking the time to understand local context (built form and natural environment), infrastructure, neighbouring built form layout, and green spaces early in the process to help inform the site layout, number of homes/commercial units and understand potential constraints which will influence the plan form.

+ Working collaboratively with other disciplines (such as ecology, arboriculture, highways, heritage) to help inform the response to constraints and inform the opportunities to make the best use of the site. For example, creating spaces which can act as visual markers for future residents to orientated themselves within the wider development.

+ Design Guides, Design Review Panels, and the National Design Guide & Code, can help inform the initial background research and offer an understanding of the proposal site and wider area, which can then be assessed and applied in relation to local and national planning policies.

+ Local opinions through consultation and engagement can be beneficial in offering practical knowledge on the local context and site constraints. Also aligns with the preferred means of practice set out in the NPPF, which seeks to encourage public consultation.

+ An informational discussion during the CPD highlighted the difficulties faced in the industry where Councilโ€™s do not have in-house design support and the importance of collaboration in ensuring high quality and desirable places where people want to live and work can be delivered.

๐Ÿ‘ทโ€โ™‚๏ธ Our Managing Director, Nathan McLoughlin, was delighted to chair and host a Rural Planning Seminar, alongside long-standing friend, George Paton, Managing Director of Paton Land. The discussion was centred around the Government changes to planning and what this specifically meant for landowners.

๐Ÿค Following the publication of the NPPF in December, we have been hosting a number of one-to-one sessions with developer clients and other professionals, giving them the time to ask us questions about what we think the changes mean and how they are applied to our clients' businesses. The Frilford Heath event was an opportunity for us to give something back to an important part of our client base, farmers and other landowners, giving them the benefit of our understanding of the changes and what they mean for them.

๐Ÿšœ Given all the changes the farming and landowning community is facing, it's been really valuable for us to gain insights into what this means firsthand. This enables us to better tailor our approach and also understand how we can better address these concerns in a planning environment. Our Director, Chris Fleming, and Senior Planner, Harriet Bray, who also attended, were invaluable in helping with this.

โœจ We aim to do more of these through the year and if you would be interested in attending, please let us know. McLoughlin Planning has secured planning approval for 13x affordable homes with associated works on land to the north of Down Ampney, near Cirencester. The proposed development will deliver much-needed housing on an allocated parcel of land within the Cotswold District Council Local Plan and inside a defined settlement boundary. The approved scheme is a high-quality, considered and sensitively designed residential development which strives to set a โ€œnew standardโ€ for the delivery of affordable housing. These homes will be among the most energy efficient to be built in the district in recent years, in accordance with the Government and Councilโ€™s climate action ambitions.
