What is Pilates? Pilates is a form of exercise, which emphasizes core strength, flexibility, and body awareness in order to support efficient, graceful movement. Pilates benefits a wide range of people from athletes to women following pregnancy, and people at various stages of physical rehabilitation. All exercises are developed with modifications that can make a workout safe and challenging for a person at any level or age. By doing Pilates regularly, you become stronger, more toned, and develop a better awareness of you posture. This allows you to use your body more efficiently, helping to prevent injury. Core strength is the foundation of Pilates exercise. The core muscles are the deep, internal ‘corset-like’ muscles of the abdomen and back. When the core muscles are strong they work in together with the more superficial muscles of the trunk to support the spine and movement. More about Kate:

Kate Pilkington, Senior Musculoskeltal Physiotherapist BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy, MCSP, AACP. Kate qualified from Southampton University in 2005 with a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy. She has since worked in three large NHS hospitals gaining a wide range of experience in muscular and joint conditions as well as complex surgical rehabilitation. She has also run outpatient treatment centres at GP practices, and has an extensive private consultancy portfolio. Kate is a keen sportswoman and can prescribe a regime to fit exercise around a busy work schedule. She is also qualified in ergonomics so can best advise how to maintain a healthy posture in a work environment. Aside from her job as a Private Senior Physiotherapist, Kate runs Pilates classes every week in Cheltenham and is also available for one to one Pilates if preferred. Kate is based in Gloucestershire and is available for a private Physiotherapy or Pilates consultation in your home.
