Horses instinctively know how to stretch, youโll no doubt have seen it for yourself! Theyโll stretch spontaneously, and naturally, and (normally) will not overstretch. Stretching is something we as horse owners can do for ourselves, though it is always beneficial to check with and take advice from a professional to ensure the stretches are being performed correctly. Regular stretching is extremely beneficial to both you and your horse! These benefits include: relaxation, reduction of overall muscle stiffness, increased circulation, increased flexibility, improved coordination, reduced likelihood of strain, and provides regular feedback on your horses condition. The benefits are immediate and are particularly prevalent when done before and after exercise or after a massage.
If youโre just getting into stretching your horse start slow and gentle, give your horse time to adjust their body and mind to the exercise. Make sure to do a little warm up session before you start stretching as this will limit the risk of overstretching! Some horses take longer to adjust when starting out, especially if it involves an area of discomfort such as an arthritic joint, so make sure to be patient and take your time. Whilst performing the stretch you may feel your horse stretch themselves fully, this shows that your horse is enjoying the stretch. After theyโve stopped stretching themself you may end the exercise as it will have no further benefit. Be aware of your own posture at the same time, you donโt want to injure yourself in the process! When releasing the stretch be sure to do so gently - if you allow your horse to sn**ch their leg back and slap their hoof down it increases the likelihood of injuring a tendon or ligament. So why not give it a go and reap the benefits!
