It's always important to warm your horse up before working them, regardless of the work that they're doing, but it's especially important in cold weather when they need a little bit extra to warm their muscles up! A thorough warm up helps to prevent muscle injury and fatigue, which is especially important when you're working your horse hard - like during competitions. Massage is a great way to warm your horse up before exercise, ensuring maximum comfort for your ride as well as minimalizing the likelihood of injury. With winter dressage on the way, why not book a massage to help optimise your horses performance and put you one step ahead of the game? If youโ€™re interested drop a message or WhatsApp me on 07752906273 ๐ŸŽ

Horses instinctively know how to stretch, youโ€™ll no doubt have seen it for yourself! Theyโ€™ll stretch spontaneously, and naturally, and (normally) will not overstretch. Stretching is something we as horse owners can do for ourselves, though it is always beneficial to check with and take advice from a professional to ensure the stretches are being performed correctly. Regular stretching is extremely beneficial to both you and your horse! These benefits include: relaxation, reduction of overall muscle stiffness, increased circulation, increased flexibility, improved coordination, reduced likelihood of strain, and provides regular feedback on your horses condition. The benefits are immediate and are particularly prevalent when done before and after exercise or after a massage.

If youโ€™re just getting into stretching your horse start slow and gentle, give your horse time to adjust their body and mind to the exercise. Make sure to do a little warm up session before you start stretching as this will limit the risk of overstretching! Some horses take longer to adjust when starting out, especially if it involves an area of discomfort such as an arthritic joint, so make sure to be patient and take your time. Whilst performing the stretch you may feel your horse stretch themselves fully, this shows that your horse is enjoying the stretch. After theyโ€™ve stopped stretching themself you may end the exercise as it will have no further benefit. Be aware of your own posture at the same time, you donโ€™t want to injure yourself in the process! When releasing the stretch be sure to do so gently - if you allow your horse to sn**ch their leg back and slap their hoof down it increases the likelihood of injuring a tendon or ligament. So why not give it a go and reap the benefits!

Massage therapy is the process of kneading, rubbing, tapping, and manipulating the soft tissues of the body to promote healing by reducing muscle fatigue, inflammation, or tightness. There are many tools that can help both massage therapist and horse owners alike to perform massage alongside hands-on massage therapy, some of these include: red light therapy equipment, electronic massage pads, heat therapy equipment, cryotherapy equipment, and kinesiology tape.

Massage therapy can be used prior to exercise to warm up the muscles, or after exercise to loosen the muscles and increase circulation which reduces stiffness, loss of flexibility, and fatigue. This is especially beneficial when competing to keep your horse in optimal working condition. Regular maintenance massages are very beneficial for preventing future injuries, increasing range of motion, enhancing muscle tone, and relieving stress and tension. It can also help to point owners towards problem areas that may require a different equine specialist.
