🤰 Refer yourself for NHS pregnancy care 💙

If you’ve just found out you’re pregnant, you can now refer yourself directly to NHS maternity services – no need to see a GP first (unless you have a long-term health condition or are taking medication).

✨ Pregnancy care – also called antenatal care – helps keep you and your baby as healthy as possible.

✨ After you self-refer, your local maternity service will contact you to arrange your first midwife appointment (ideally before 10 weeks of pregnancy).

✨ If you’re over 10 weeks, don’t worry – it’s still important to start your care as soon as possible.

📍 All you need to do is enter your postcode, town, or city in England to find local NHS trusts with maternity services. Most will have an online referral form.

💡 Your first appointment is a chance to discuss your health, ask questions, and plan the care you’ll receive throughout your pregnancy.

For more information and to start your referral, visit 👉 www.nhs.uk/pregnancy-care

💙 Support is here when you need it most 💙

The NHS has launched a campaign to raise awareness of Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs) – specialist services that provide free, confidential care and support to anyone who has been r***d, sexually assaulted or abused, at any time in their life.

✨ SARCs are available 24/7 across England.
✨ You do not have to speak to the police or report what happened to access help.
✨ The SARC team will explain your options and support you in the way you choose.

Support available at SARCs includes:
✔️ Crisis care in a safe environment
✔️ Medical and forensic examinations
✔️ Emergency contraception & STI testing
✔️ Access to an independent sexual violence advisor
✔️ Referrals to counselling and mental health services

👉 Search ‘sexual assault referral centres’ or visit: www.nhs.uk/SARCs to find your nearest centre.

🔔 Why does screening matter?

Screening is one of the best tools we have for detecting illnesses early – before symptoms even begin. This means treatment can start sooner, giving people the best chance of recovery.

Examples of NHS screening programmes include:
🟢 Cervical screening (smear tests) – checking for abnormal cells that could lead to cervical cancer
🟢 Bowel cancer screening – looking for early signs of cancer through simple stool tests
🟢 Diabetic eye screening – spotting changes to the eyes caused by diabetes

Remember: screening is for people without symptoms. If you notice changes in your health, always see your GP, even if your last screening was normal.

💡 Don’t put off your screening invitations – they could save your life.

🩸 Blood Cancer Awareness Month

Every September is blood cancer awareness month, which shines a light on blood cancers – the 5th most common type of cancer in the UK, with around 250,000 people currently living with the condition.

Blood cancers include:
🔴 Leukaemia
🔴 Lymphoma
🔴 Myeloma

Common symptoms can include:
✔️ Persistent tiredness or fatigue
✔️ Unexplained weight loss
✔️ Frequent infections
✔️ Unusual bruising or bleeding

Raising awareness helps people recognise symptoms sooner and seek medical advice early – which can save lives. It also reminds us to support the many patients and families affected.

What are gallstones?

Gallstones are small stones that form in the gallbladder. Many people don’t experience symptoms, but if a gallstone blocks the bile duct, it can cause severe stomach pain (biliary colic), nausea, or vomiting.

📌 They can be found through scans or X-rays, and treatment may only be needed if symptoms persist or complications develop.
