A bittersweet day for us today, as Amber conducted her final funeral from our Allestree office, which unfortunately will be closing its doors.

While this is not the last service she will conduct for J. Barlow, it marks the end of a chapter in a place that has meant so much to so many families.

While this marks the end of an era for this location, our focus, as always, was on the remarkable life we were privileged to honour.

Today we celebrated and said goodbye to a truly beautiful lady, remembered by all who knew her as a ray of sunshine. It felt only fitting that, as family and friends gathered to celebrate her life, the sun gently broke through—offering warmth and light, just as she had done for so many throughout her years.

Moments like these encourage us to pause and reflect on life itself—how deeply we can impact one another, and how the simplest acts of warmth and care can leave the most lasting impressions.💚

This morning, Josh spent some time sharing his thoughts on grief, and we wanted to share them with you.

In today’s video, he reflects on how grief can feel overwhelming, and how something as simple as stepping outside can make a small difference. Taking in some fresh air, noticing the world around you, and allowing yourself a quiet moment can gently ease the weight, even if only for a little while.

Everyone’s journey with grief is different, and there’s no right way to navigate it. But sometimes, those small moments—like being outside—can help us feel just a little more grounded.

With a heavy heart, I want to share an important update with the families and community who have supported my business over the years.

After a great deal of thought, I have made the very difficult and sad decision to close the funeral home premises. This has not been an easy decision, as serving and supporting families during some of the most difficult moments in their lives has always meant a great deal to me.

I want to reassure everyone that although the funeral home building will be closing, the business itself will continue to operate. I will still be here to provide the same personal care, guidance and support to families arranging funerals and memorial services.

It has truly been an honour to serve this community and I am deeply grateful for the trust, kindness and support that so many families have shown over the years.

Throughout the years we have shared so many meaningful moments with the families we have supported – moments of trust, care, sadness, reflection and even the occasional unexpected laugh. Those moments, and the people we have met along the way, will stay with us forever.

Josh and Amber will both continue working together, just as we always have. If you need either of us for advice, support or to discuss arrangements, please do not hesitate to get in touch.

We have been privileged to help so many families and in doing so have made many genuine friendships within this community, something we will always be grateful for.

As part of National Apprenticeships Week, we’re proud to shine a spotlight on Amber and her journey with J Barlow & Family funeral service and dedication to her apprenticeship.📚

Amber joined the team at just 17, completed her Level 2 Funeral Arranging Apprenticeship and achieved a distinction. Her dedication quickly stood out, and by the age of 19, Amber had progressed to conducting her first funeral, a huge milestone for anyone within the profession. She’s now working towards her Level 3 Mortuary Technician Apprenticeship, gaining vital experience for caring for loved ones.

Amber isn’t one for being in front of the camera; she prefers working quietly in the background. Much of what she does may go unseen by families, but it’s absolutely essential in ensuring every funeral is carried out with dignity, care, and respect.

She’s passionate about encouraging more young people to consider apprenticeships. Amber is a strong supporter of gaining qualifications and experience and believes the future of independent, family-run funeral directors depends on welcoming the next generation into the profession. She’s also proud to challenge outdated stereotypes, showing that there’s a place for young people and women at every level of funeral care.

Inspired to follow in Josh’s footsteps, Amber plans to progress onto a Level 3 Funeral Director Apprenticeship, with future goals of gaining further qualifications and becoming a qualified embalmer. Her dedication, attention to detail, and teamwork make her a real asset to the team 👏
