All hail the Cadillac! 🙌🏻

Here it is folks, the first piece of Pilates apparatus ever invented by Joe himself! The trapeze table is widely nicknamed “The Cadillac” because in the 1940’s and 50’s, Cadillac cars were referred to as the cars offering the best of everything regarding versatility.

There’s a reason that the Cadillac looks like a glorified metal four poster bed, and that’s because the early designs were developed during World War 1 by modifying hospital beds. Joe took bedsprings and attached them to the metal bed frames to allow bedridden injured soldiers to exercise, rehabilitate and regain their strength.

Although the Cadillac’s original focus was rehabilitation, its versatility offers the possibility of performing over 200 exercises, including acrobatic hanging ones. Here though, you will see a still shot of Chloë demonstrating a calm and simple foot exercise using the push-through bar sprung from below on the wonderful trapeze table.

Here at BIM, we love the Wunda chair. Absolutely worship it. Soooooo, we thought that we might show it some love on here, and give you all some rather Wunda-ful facts about it. 🥰

Before we start, we’d like to point out that we know this clip shows Mel using a gorgeous Exo Chair rather than a traditional Wunda Chair, but it belongs to the Wunda Chair family, so please feast your eyes upon this gorgeous piece of kit, and learn something that maybe you didn’t before…

⭐️The Wunda chair was designed by Joseph Pilates in the 1930’s-40’s, made for small spaces and maximum versatility.

⭐️The design of the robust frame and spring loaded pedal allow endless adaptations of exercises standing, seated or laying with varying levels of resistance.

⭐️Early models were designed to be home furniture for small apartment spaces that also doubled as exercise equipment. Compact and versatile.

⭐️Some models (like the Exo Chair here) have a split pedal design to allow for more variations of movements using single arms or legs. Some may also have detachable handles.

⭐️The adjustable springs allow for variations of intensity, and the small seat requires more stability and control in comparison to equipment with larger bases of support.

⭐️The adaptability of the chair makes it ideal for building functional strength for daily life, rehabilitating injuries, or providing an intense workout. The perfect piece of studio equipment.

Happy Mother’s Day to the Mother of Pilates, the absolutely incredible Clara Pilates. 🙌🏻

Pilates wouldn’t be what it is today without Clara’s passion and dedication. She continued to teach and run the studio after Joseph’s passing, and worked especially with the first generation of teachers Joe had chosen to continue his method. She even gave us the Clara Step Barrel, her very own creation used in Pilates studios across the world. Her kindness, maternal instincts and forward thinking made her a formidable teacher and founder.

In an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, published 24th July 1972, Clara says “Joe and I met on a boat coming to this country from Germany. We talked so much about health and the need to keep the body healthy. We decided to open a physical fitness studio with apparatus which we invented. I was trained as a nursery and kindergarten teacher. All my life I have thought of myself as a mother. I was the oldest in a family of nine, and people have always felt they could depend upon me like a nurse. This work came naturally to me.”

Thank you Clara, for all the love you put into your work and your students. We hope we’re making you proud. 🤍

We spend our whole lives being told that we should strive to be “healthy” both mentally and physically. Whilst “healthy” should absolutely be the goal, it can become a bit of an issue when that same “healthy” becomes a certain look, body type, lifestyle choice or trend.

There are many different ways to be a healthy person and live a healthy life, and there’s certainly no “one-size-fits-all” criteria list that we should all aim to check off. No one knows you better than you do. Don’t try to cram yourself into a box that doesn’t fit you. Be your own kind of healthy, that’s what looks best on you after all. 🫶🏻

PS…..Pilates does actually look good on everybody, just saying…….🤭
