Happy Mother’s Day to the Mother of Pilates, the absolutely incredible Clara Pilates. đŸ™ŒđŸ»

Pilates wouldn’t be what it is today without Clara’s passion and dedication. She continued to teach and run the studio after Joseph’s passing, and worked especially with the first generation of teachers Joe had chosen to continue his method. She even gave us the Clara Step Barrel, her very own creation used in Pilates studios across the world. Her kindness, maternal instincts and forward thinking made her a formidable teacher and founder.

In an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, published 24th July 1972, Clara says “Joe and I met on a boat coming to this country from Germany. We talked so much about health and the need to keep the body healthy. We decided to open a physical fitness studio with apparatus which we invented. I was trained as a nursery and kindergarten teacher. All my life I have thought of myself as a mother. I was the oldest in a family of nine, and people have always felt they could depend upon me like a nurse. This work came naturally to me.”

We spend our whole lives being told that we should strive to be “healthy” both mentally and physically. Whilst “healthy” should absolutely be the goal, it can become a bit of an issue when that same “healthy” becomes a certain look, body type, lifestyle choice or trend.

There are many different ways to be a healthy person and live a healthy life, and there’s certainly no “one-size-fits-all” criteria list that we should all aim to check off. No one knows you better than you do. Don’t try to cram yourself into a box that doesn’t fit you. Be your own kind of healthy, that’s what looks best on you after all. đŸ«¶đŸ»

Catch yourself with your shoulders up round your ears? Realise you’re sitting like a shrimp? Wonder why your jaw aches? Yeah, us too. We’re only human after all. Life can be pretty stressful, and our bodies manifest that stress. Productivity as a value is so enforced within our society that we rush around constantly, treating everything as urgent. Our poor nervous systems are fried!

Ever wondered why you walk out of the studio feeling calmer? More grounded? Taller? Lighter? We hear it from our clients all the time. It’s because you paused. You landed in your body. You turn your attention inward. You moved. You breathed, really breathed. You slowed down. You were intentional. Doesn’t that tell you everything you need to know?

Climb a tree 🌳 on the ladder barrel.

You know those exercises that feel like mega multitaskers? Yeah, this sure feels like one of them! If you want to target hamstring flexibility, spinal mobility and abdominal strength, then this is your bestie. There’s even a sciatic nerve floss thrown in for good measure, what’s not to love?! đŸ«¶đŸ»

Of course, this fabulous exercise is commonly done on the reformer, but we all know you can pop every exercise on every piece of kit in some version. We just loooove how good the curve of the barrel feels on the spine! đŸ™ŒđŸ»
