From 7am Friday 25 July to 7am Wednesday 30 July, some resident doctors across the NHS will take part in industrial action. If you have an appointment at one of our hospitals, attend as normal unless we contact you. It is important that everyone who needs urgent medical attention continues to access NHS services:

➡️ Call 999 or visit A&E for life-threatening or serious conditions, such as heart attacks and strokes
➡️ Visit an Urgent Treatment Centre for minor injuries or illnesses, such as broken bones, sprains, minor infections, cuts and more
➡️ Contact NHS 111 online or by phone for advice on where to receive care
➡️ GP surgeries and dental practices will remain open
➡️ Pharmacies are able to treat some common conditions and are available for advice

Meet nine-year-old Mara Dinnis, who is sporting her new hair style after making the bold decision to donate her hair to The Little Princess Trust, a charity that makes wigs for children who have experienced hair loss from illness or treatment. ✨

Mara lives with Diamond Blackfan Anaemia Syndrome (DBAS), an incredibly rare disorder with an estimated 350 diagnoses in the UK - where a person's bone marrow does not make enough red blood cells, causing severe anaemia.

Mara and her family have received lots of support from the national DBAS charity, which 'delivers support, research and hope to the DBAS community' - and Mara has played her own brilliant part with fundraising for the charity in her school.

She is on a programme of regular blood transfusions which she receives at Royal Derby Hospital every three weeks and next week will undergo a bone marrow transplant at Birmingham Children’s Hospital as part of her treatment. Preparing for the procedure involves a course of chemotherapy, and one of the side effects of this is hair loss.

Mara decided she wanted her hair to be used for a good cause, spurring her decision to go for the big chop. She has since gone for a bright new look and is over the moon with the results.

📝 Mara's impressive fundraising efforts haven't gone unnoticed - she has been recognised for her bravery and charitable work by the local news, and you can read the full article on the Derbyshire Live website here: https://www.derbytelegraph.co.uk/news/derby-news/inspirational-derby-pupil-mara-9-10351284

And Mara wants to keep on making an impact for others, including raising more awareness about DBAS, saying: "I would really like to go into schools when I'm older to help people understand the condition."

We wish Mara the best of luck for her upcoming transplant. 💙

There is still time to share your views about midwife-led birthing services in Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent, which includes the birthing service at Samuel Johnson Community Hospital.

The consultation is open until Sunday 3 August and Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care Board want to hear from as many people as possible.

"We want to ensure that Deaf voices are at the heart of our research - so that real, meaningful improvements can be made" 💙

UHDB colleague Dr Anna Selby PhD is leading a new study which aims to address health inequalities in the Deaf community, thanks to more than £100,000 in funding from National Institute for Health and Care Research. 📓✍🏻

The research will engage with Deaf individuals in our communities directly, as they share their experiences of navigating NHS services and highlight the areas where change is needed most urgently. This will help to co-create solutions that break down barriers to care, both at UHDB and across the NHS. 📶

"It's nice to put UHDB on the UK dermatology map. It makes everyone happy and this is very much about 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, rather than just one person's award" 🌟

Congratulations to Dr Rabi Nambi, a Consultant Dermatologist at UHDB for over 20 years, who has been honoured as 𝐂𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐘𝐞𝐚𝐫 by the British Association of Dermatologists 👏

Dr Nambi has been recognised for providing invaluable learning opportunities for the next generation of dermatologists at the Trust and beyond - ensuring the highest quality of care is delivered by Dermatology both today, and in the future.

"It was compassion personified. When you're in the department, as a patient or with someone you love, you are feeling vulnerable - but the team made a 𝗵𝘂𝗴𝗲 difference." 💫

UHDB Chair, Prem Singh, recently saw the "remarkable" care delivered by our Royal Derby Hospital Emergency Department first-hand, after an emergency visit with a family member. 💙

Prem was at the side of his relative when he was rushed to hospital after falling seriously ill - and was cared for by Dr Mohammed Abdelaziz, Consultant, Dr Becky Norman, Senior Doctor in Emergency Medicine, and Ashleigh Godwin, Senior Sister.

After this experience, the three colleagues were recognised as 'Patient Heroes' for their "genuine care and compassion", during what was a distressing time for Prem and his family.

UTCs and MIUs can provide treatment for a range of minor illnesses and injuries, including burns, sprains, broken bones, or cuts.

Use NHS 111 online or phone services if you're unsure where is best for you to get the care you need. Find out more about Minor Injuries Units and Urgent Treatment Centres in your area, including waiting times, via our website: https://bit.ly/3LwLTPp

Today marks 77 years since the birth of our National Health Service.

From Burton General, Derbyshire Royal Infirmary, and The Manor Hospital to our five hospital sites all these years later: we want to take this opportunity to say 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙠 𝙮𝙤𝙪 to our incredible staff and volunteers, past and present, for making both the NHS and UHDB the organisations they are today.

Our Story

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust was formed on 1 July 2018 to bring together our five hospitals – in Derby, Burton, Lichfield and Tamworth – to provide the highest quality care to patients across southern Derbyshire and south east Staffordshire. Our aim is to deliver outstanding care for local people as we bring together the expertise of our 12,000 staff across our five hospital sites.
