The third symbol located on our Access Card is our Essential Companion symbol, sometimes referred to as our +1 in reference to how the symbol is shown on the card.
For some people, going to a venue alone isn't possible. They may suffer from mobility problems that require assistance, need help communicating with other people, or feel overwhelmed without support. Because of this, they will always purchase two tickets to events, creating a financial barrier for them caused by a disability. This is where our +1 is here to help.
Our +1 is there to communicate to a venue that they person using the card will require another ticket when they visit, and to help alleviate this barrier, the venue must provide the essential companion with a discounted or sometimes free ticket.
We can only apply the +1 where we see someone's need for this companion is essential, that without this help they would be at a substantial disadvantage compared to other people attending. Because of this, when assessing the +1 for children, we need to understand that they would be at a significant disadvantage compared to other children, even with a parent or guardian who would already be in attendance. An example of this is if the parent requires additional help on top of the care they already provide, or if care they provide goes beyond what could be expected of any parent or guardian.
For us to award this symbol, we would need to see documentation that can explain to us your need for assistance when in the community. This could be through DLA/ PIP/ AA or a letter/report from a medical professional which indicates this need to us.
We hope this explains our Essential Companion symbol a little more thoroughly. If you have any other questions, please let us know and we'd be more than happy to answer them.
