Welcome to our page
We are Wathall's,The Funeral Directors, est. 1858
As Derby's longest established independent funeral directors we offer traditional values with a modern approach.
8 community branches | Full Bereavement Support
Golden Charter Plans are independent funeral directors based in Derbyshire, with branches in Derby, Allestree, Ashbourne, Alvaston, Borrowash, Burton and Chaddesden. Helen has recently been joined by the sixth generation, her daughters Bec and Charlotte, so it really is a family run business. At Wathall's we pride ourselves on the exceptional service and care we provide during your time of need. This support is offered 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. We also offer advice on making your funeral wishes known, and also offer pre-paid funeral plans through Golden Charter. Wathall's Funeral Directors is an appointed representative of Golden Charter Limited trading as Golden Charter Funeral Plans which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN:965279). Our care does not end once the funeral of your loved one has taken place either. We offer free bereavement support through Derby Dandelions, our bereavement support group, which meets twice a month and provides a safe place, with friendly faces, where you can enjoy the company of others who are going through a similar time. In addition to this, our educational programme, Grief Journey Derby, operates twice a year. This is a free 3-4 week programme, led by trained facilitators, which takes you through your own unique Grief Journey, explaining some of the feelings you may be experiencing. The trees have begun to turn autumnal, and so have the flowers our families are choosing to decorate their loved ones coffin.

How beautiful does this stunning spray and garland look, a fitting tribute.

Everyone expects the funeral industry to be a sad and serious place, but it really isn't.

Don't get me wrong, we feel sadness and act with professional conduct when it is appropriate, however, no one prepared me for this...

Laughter.

In some funeral arrangements there will be some form of laughter. Whether that be at retelling a funny story about their loved one or something their loved one would have found funny happens, next thing, the entire room is giggling and the weight of the loss feels somewhat lighter for a moment.

We love our job, if we didn't, we couldn't do it. Some of the experiences you have while working in the funeral industry take a particular type of strength. But sadness and joy come hand in hand, and no matter how difficult the situation, a smile, chuckle, or full blown belly laughs surprise us by making an appearance at some point.

We love to hear the stories about your loved ones, but above that, we love to hear them remembered fondly with a smile... or sometimes a laugh.

What do you want to know about the funeral industry, let us know in the comments.

With the recent news coverage around burials in the UK, we have been asked a few times what is the difference between a burial and an interment, the answer is nothing. They are the same thing, just a different way of saying it.

That's the real meaning of legacy. No matter how brief or long we are on this planet, as funeral directors we are privileged to hear some of your fondest memories of your loved ones after they die.

What stands out when we make funeral arrangements, is how much of that person lives on in those sat in front of us.

Kindness remains. Warmth remains. Love remains.

With this in mind, we believe that living forever is not the goal, but leaving behind a legacy that will, is. No matter how small that impact may have been, the ripples flow through the generations.

This is the reason we do what we do. What wonderful feedback for our team from this family 🤍🎩

The real meaning of family business.

G. Wathall & Son was established in 1858 by George Wathall. 6 generation later and his great great granddaughter Helen Wathall is our Managing Director.

Through the generations, World Wars, pandemics, revolutions and changes of needs, our mission has always been the same.

Do the right thing.

When your name is above the door your business becomes your legacy, putting our long term commitment to our community over and above any short term gain.

When asked about what it means to work for our family business, words such as pride, honour and hard work are echoed through the team.

There's something special that comes along with working with multiple generations of one family. You have balance of knowledge and understanding complimented by innovation and modernisation.

We’d love to know any stories about previous generations of our team you have ⤵️ drop them in the comments

👋🏼 We're collecting books again on behalf of Derby Book Festival!

We will be collecting children's books until 1st June at all of our branches.

These books will then be collected by Derby Book Festivals team, checked in, categorised and age banded before being distributed throughout the local area to those who have appealed.

Books bring so much joy to children, not only helping develop a fundamental skill in reading but also imagination and creativity.

Your donations can help inspire the next generations of readers.

Do you remember the first book you loved?

80 years ago on Thursday, our families celebrated victory in Europe. After a long 5 year battle, fought in the fields, cities, towns and skies, they celebrated in the streets as the Germans surrendered.

Today, we are incredibly grateful for the sacrifice of those men and women who didn’t come home, for those men and women who lived with the memories of what they survived and those men and women who rebuilt our country after its decimation.

In our fast paced world, it is our responsibility to never forget their sacrifice. So today, as we celebrate VE Day, we will remember them.
