Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Mental health, children's and learning disability services. Page monitored 9am-5pm Mon-Fri. Members receive regular updates on our news and upcoming events.

As a Foundation Trust we are required to build a membership which is as representative of the community we serve as possible. Local people are invited to become a member of the Trust, to work with us to provide the most suitable services for the local population. They are also represented by a Council of Governors. We have a clear vision for the Trust, underpinned by objectives that serve as the basis for decision making and forward planning. Our vision and objectives guide us in how we balance the interests of patients, the local community and other stakeholders. The Trust has a Board of Directors, sometimes known as the Trust Board. This Board has a responsibility to make the best use of financial resources and deliver the services people need, to standards of safety and quality which are agreed nationally. Inclusion is important to the Trust and we are one of the only mental health Trusts in the country to be led by a Chair and Chief Executive from the BAME community. We are a friendly, values driven Trust and put our people first in the knowledge that an engaged and empowered workforce leads to good patient care. It’s a good time to join Team Derbyshire Healthcare – we are growing, with lots of exciting new developments and investment in local mental health services.

75% of our colleagues say the Trust is a good place to work or receive care. According to our staff survey we are one of the best trusts of our type, with active staff networks. We have a good mix of services; inpatient and community, children’s universal, perinatal and many more. We take the wellbeing of our colleagues seriously, champion staff engagement and have an ongoing programme of staff reward and recognition. Our main inpatient sites are Kingsway Hospital in Derby, the Radbourne Unit based on the Royal Derbyshire Hospital site in Derby, the Hartington Unit based on the Royal Derbyshire Hospital site in Chesterfield – with teams across the whole of the county. We provide Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Derby city. In Learning Disability services which we provide in Derby, we have recently formed an alliance with Derbyshire Community Health Services to lead across the county. We’re also actively involved in work across the system and region; to ensure that the NHS continues to improve the delivery of services across the patch to the communities we serve. His Majesty’s (HM) Lord-Lieutenant of Derbyshire led a celebration event for the official opening of Derbyshire Healthcare's newly built mental health facility in Chesterfield. The event coincided with World Mental Health Day on 10 October, marking a major milestone in the Trust’s £150 million Making Room for Dignity programme.

“It is a privilege to formally open the Derwent Unit on behalf of His Majesty. This facility represents a remarkable achievement for Derbyshire that places dignity, privacy and recovery at the centre of mental health care.

“The thoughtful design and therapeutic spaces reflect the compassion and commitment of everyone involved. Today is a celebration of progress, partnership and the power of purpose.”

The Derwent Unit opening ceremony will be starting shortly, and we are thrilled to be sharing with occasion with HM Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Elizabeth Fothergill, CBE, as well of a number of special guests.

Today we are joined by colleagues who are delivering exceptional care from this fabulous new environment, Toby Perkins – our local MP for Chesterfield, patient and carer representatives from our EQUAL Forum together colleagues from Derbyshire Healthcare's Board of Directors, the Integrated Care Board and partners from Chesterfield Royal Hospital who also provide services from this site.
We’re also delighted to welcome several individuals currently receiving care on our wards to join today’s celebrations.

Today would not have been possible without the dedication and determination of the hard-working colleagues at Derbyshire Healthcare. We would like to take this opportunity to say a heartfelt thank you to the many staff that have contributed to the successful completion, move and opening of the Derwent Unit.

Today, on World Mental Health Day, we are incredibly proud to be joined by His Majesty’s Lord Lieutenant of Derbyshire, Elizabeth Fothergill, CBE, for the official opening ceremony for the brand new `Derwent Unit at Chesterfield Royal Hospital.

The opening of the unit, which welcomed its first patients back in March, marks a new era in mental health care in Derbyshire, coming after years of research, planning and building, all in collaboration with staff, service users and carers.

The Derwent Unit, part of our Making Room For Dignity programme, provides mental healthcare for 54 adults of working age, who each have their own private, en-suite bedroom. The wards are equipped with modern facilities and additional resources such as an Activities of Daily Living (ADL) kitchen, fitness room and access to a secure sky garden.

We’ve received lots of positive feedback from patients, colleagues, carers and visitors during the six months the ward has been open, with comments outlining the positive difference the new environment has made to people’s care and recovery.

This week we proudly celebrate SAS Week, recognising the vital contributions of our Specialty and Specialist (SAS) doctors across the NHS. SAS doctors bring a wealth of experience, clinical expertise and leadership to our services, often working in extended roles, education, governance and advocacy. At Derbyshire Healthcare, we are fortunate to have a dedicated SAS workforce who play a crucial role in delivering high-quality, compassionate care.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank our SAS colleagues for their dedication and celebrate their impact across the Trust and beyond.
