Oral health & s*xual health: What you need to know during National Smile Month.

Did you know that your oral health and s*xual health are closely connected? As we celebrate National Smile Month, it’s a great time to talk about protecting your smile and s*xual health.

* STIs and oral health: Many s*xually transmitted infections (STIs) can be transmitted through oral s*x, affecting your mouth, teeth, and throat. Common STIs like chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HPV can all be spread this way.

* Risks: If left untreated, oral infections from STIs can damage your gums and cause painful sores.

* Protection is key: Use barrier protection like condoms and dental dams during oral s*x to reduce the risk of STI transmission and protect your oral health.

* Get tested: Regular dental check-ups and STI screenings are essential for keeping both your mouth and body healthy.

Go get your free STI test on our website: https://bit.ly/42H4VNv

Let’s break the stigma and talk openly about how protecting our oral and s*xual health can keep us smiling confidently, not just during National Smile Month, but all year long.

We recently hosted two Spring S*xual Health Networking Events in Derby and Chesterfield – bringing together professionals, community partners and service users to explore how we can challenge stigma and promote more inclusive s*xual health services across Derbyshire.

We were joined by Dee Whinell – award-winning educator, author and campaigner – who shared powerful insights from their lived experience and offered practical tips for making services truly inclusive.

Local charity Platform31 delivered a thought-provoking creative workshop on how stigma can show up in our work, and Derbyshire LGBT+ spoke about our ongoing partnership and the success of hosting community clinics in their spaces.

We’re so grateful to all the speakers, attendees and organisers who helped make these events such a success. It’s brilliant to see the passion and collaboration that exists across our local network – together, we’re building more informed, inclusive and accessible s*xual health services for all.
