What better way to brighten up a miserable rainy day than by baking some childhood favourites? ☔️🧁

Today our residents enjoyed making rice crispy cakes and cornflake cakes, topped with colourful hundreds and thousands. The activity brought back lots of happy memories, residents recalled baking these treats for their children’s birthday parties.

A big thank you to Ella, our gardener, for helping out and getting involved — it was lovely to have her join us 🌼

And the best part? Our residents will be enjoying their homemade treats for supper later today 💛

📚 More of our residents’ most memorable reads… 📚

We’re delighted to share two more wonderful book choices from our Springwood residents as our book club journey continues.

Rita chose the timeless adventure Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson. She loved the intrigue and excitement woven through this classic tale of pirates, hidden treasure and daring journeys — a story that has captured imaginations for generations. 🏴‍☠️

Our second recommendation comes from Frances, who selected another much-loved classic, Alice Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll. Frances enjoyed the clever, logical framework behind the fantastical story, finding joy in the way it plays with ideas, language and imagination. ♟️

More favourites to come soon including one from our lovely Marsha that really brought a tear to the eye 🥹

📖 What’s the book that has stayed with you the longest?

As today is Australia Day, we felt it only right that we took a little trip to explore all the country has to offer - virtually of course 🗺️🇦🇺

Chris was particularly looking forward to this as her granddaughter has recently made Australia her home ❤️

Where will our armchair travel take us next? We are always open to suggestions 🌍✈️

What an evening 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥃✨ We were delighted to celebrate Burns Night with our residents at Springwood House this evening, enjoying a wonderful traditional Burns Supper filled with music, laughter and delicious Scottish fare. From hearty haggis to neeps and tatties, everyone enjoyed the flavours and the sense of occasion that comes with this special night 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

A special moment of the evening came from Ian, who spent most of his life in Edinburgh and treated everyone to readings of poetry in Old Scots 🤍

Celebrations like this in a residential home are about so much more than a meal. They help spark memories, encourage conversation, and give residents a chance to share their life stories and cultural heritage. These moments of togetherness support emotional wellbeing, reduce feelings of isolation, and help everyone feel truly connected and valued 💙

A massive thank you to our wonderful team tonight: cook Pauline, and carers Carly, Justine, and Peter. Without their support, evenings like this just wouldn’t be possible.

Just over an hour to go until our Burns Night supper at Springwood and the dining room is dressed and ready 🕯️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

On the menu tonight: haggis, neeps and tatties with a whisky sauce — and of course a wee dram for anyone who’s partial 🥃

We hope our residents love it — we can’t wait to see their faces ✨❤️

📚 Springwood Book Club is coming! 📚

As we get ready to launch our very own book club here at Springwood, we’ve been asking our residents about their most memorable reads and we’re excited to share their wonderful recommendations with you over the coming week. We’d love for you to join in too by sharing your own favourites!

Our first recommendation comes from Katie, aged 102 — and with a lifetime of reading behind her, we trust her judgement completely. She chose A Gull on the Roof by Derek Tangye, the first book in the Minack Chronicles. It tells the story of Derek and his wife Jeannie, who leave London to begin a new life running a flower farm on the Cornish coast. From their earliest struggles to the arrival of their beloved animals (including Monty the ginger cat!), it’s a warm, hopeful tale of perseverance — with a gull on the roof signalling brighter days ahead. 🐦

Our second recommendation comes from Kate, who is never far from a book. She chose The Wood by John Lewis-Stempel. Growing up in Yorkshire, Kate said this book felt wonderfully real and brought back memories of her dad — a deeply personal and moving connection to nature and family. 🌳

Now it’s your turn…

It was so lovely to see Pat downstairs today — especially with that wonderful smile! She hasn’t been feeling her best lately, so it was extra special. Kate was clearly happy to see her too 💛 A perfect post to end the day on.

It seems there really is a day for everything — and yesterday was National Hug Day 🤗

Many of our residents have family living abroad, so Chris and Judith were delighted to send a virtual hug to their loved ones 💕

Look out for more virtual hugs over the next few days 😍

Springwood House got caught up in the darts hype this afternoon with a fun-filled game that everyone loved! 🎯

Residents and staff had an amazing time, enjoying lots of laughs and friendly competition.

Playing darts helps boost hand-eye coordination, focus and confidence — all while keeping everyone active and smiling.

🏆 Top 3 scores:
🥇 Frances – 240
🥈 Hilary – 230
🥉 Marsha – 150

A big thank you to Steph and Maricel for facilitating such a fun and engaging afternoon — and well done to all of our brilliant players!
