Hand hygiene myth: hotter water is more effective at killing bacteria

High heat and freezing temperatures can eliminate microorganisms, but it can also be easily assumed that hot water improves hand hygiene outcomes – it doesn’t! At least, not directly.
The temperature of water has no impact on bacteria or viruses. However, warm water is more pleasant and comfortable. If we are comfortable, we are more likely to take longer with hand hygiene, ensuring a comprehensive clean. Using cold water with disinfectants can protect you from infection just as well, providing a thorough hand hygiene routine that is not rushed.

For optimal outcomes, cap off every hand wash with DentiGel – a ready-to-use skin disinfectant that offers additional protection from pathogens.

Water maintenance is vital to keep dental unit water lines HTM 01-05 compliant. Using Bioclear Daily reduces the planktonic bacteria that builds up in the water within the unit, reducing the risk of biofilm formation and the subsequent risk of infection. Used at a 1% concentration, Bioclear Daily can be kept in suitable plastic containers for up to 10 days, making it even easier for continuous use. MRSA is a superbug that’s transmitted from skin-to-skin contact or by touching contaminated surfaces. Roughly 1 in 30 people may carry the bacteria on their skin on in their nose – without being sick.

Active symptoms include red, swollen, painful, warm or pus-filled skin. How to control it? Regular handwashing and wiping down contaminated surfaces, such as door handles, helps contain MRSA.

Contaminated blood products can cause infection, meaning patients with haemophilia need extra clinical consideration to prevent any blood loss in the dental practice.

The World Federation of Haemophilia (WHF) estimates that over 75% of people with haemophilia are undiagnosed. This means a lack of access to basic care, and the need for healthcare environments to be better prepared for affected patients. World Haemophilia Day occurs on April 17 2026 and has the theme “Diagnosis: First Step to Care”, with the hope to improve diagnostic outcomes and strengthen the skills of healthcare professionals and the effectiveness of laboratories.

“We’ve been using Dentisan for our team’s cross infection CPD training for over 6 years now. Jenny is amazing at keeping our team engaged and tailoring the advice and support to our practice needs.

“Jenny has been so supportive and helpful with setting up our practices, helping our cross infection lead with any issues or questions, and ensuring we’re compliant before any CQC inspections. I cannot recommend Jenny and the Dentisan team enough.”

Dental unit water line exposure isn’t just about patients – dental professionals are at a risk of respiratory illness.

Evidence on dental unit water microbiology has been growing since the 1960s. Research has discovered links with Gram-negative bacteria, legionellosis and Mycobacterium – making dental professionals more vulnerable to respiratory diseases.

The answer?

Disinfectants are recommended to decontaminate dental unit water lines and independent reservoir bottles. The Dentisan product range addresses this issue – try the Bioclear Biological Dip Slides and Water Testing Kits to maintain optimal water quality.
