WHATS THE DIAGNOSIS?🕵🏼
⚡️ 56 YEAR OLD FEMALE
⚡️ LATERAL HIP PAIN
⚡️ GRADUAL ONSET, WORSENING SYMPTOMS
⚡️ LOCALISED PAIN OVER GT
⚡️UNABLE TO LIE ON AFFECTED SIDE
⚡️PAIN DURING SL BALANCE
This female is suffering from greater trochanteric pain syndrome, more commonly known as GTPS.
1️⃣ This common condition is characterised by pain on the lateral (outside) of the hip. Occasionally, individuals can experience symptoms down the leg towards the knee.
2️⃣ More common in women, aged 50-70. Also high prevalence in runners.
3️⃣ Most commonly involves the gluteal tendons (glute medius / glute minimus) with or without pathology to the trochanteric bursa itself (fluid filled sac to limit friction between tendon and bone).
🤨 There are certain factors which may increase progressive load on the lateral hip and predispose individuals to GTPS such as:
- Training Errors / Biomechanic abnormalities
- Repetitive activity
- Increased BMI
- Sedentary lifestyle
⏰ Rehab timeframes may differ dependent on the health of the tendon and other comorbidites which impacts on tissue healing times.
