The bandaging of battle wounds is shown on Classical Greek pottery from c.500 BC.

There are numerous references to first aid performed in the Roman Army, with a system of first aid supported by surgeons, field ambulances and hospitals.

Further examples occur through history, mostly related to battle.

In 1870 Military Surgeon Friedrich Von Esmarch introduced formalized first aid to the military. Including teaching bandaging skills for soldiers.

The Esmarch bandage which he designed showed soldiers how to perform first aid.

What do you do if stung by a wasp or bee?

If the sting has been left in your skin, you should remove it asap.

Scrape it sideways with something with a hard edge such as a bank card.

It’s important not to pinch the skin with your fingers or tweezers because you may spread the venom.

If you’re still concerned, or symptoms worsen, more swelling, redness or flu like symptoms or you’ve been stung or bitten in the mouth or throat or near your eyes. It’s important to seek advise from the GP or NHS 111.

It’s important to look for the signs and symptoms of Anaphylaxis especially with first time stings, then call 999/112 if you suspect Anaphylaxis. Any swelling can be treated with a cold compress for 10 minutes to ease pain and reduce swelling.

With better weather on the way, we thought it would be good to talk about keeping safe in the sun.

The best protection is to cover up and be safe in the sun. Wear a hat and long sleeves. It’s important to check your skin regularly for any changes
Report any changes to your skin to your GP. Boots also now offer a mole scanning service too.

Starting a conversation can help tackle the stigma surrounding mental health.

Thinking carefully before the meeting can help and it's important that the location is in the right environment.

Have you researched advise to where you can signpost? Can you be overheard?

Ask open questions, such as “How are you feeling?” avoid closed yes/no questions.

Take the time to listen without making personal judgement. Signpost to relevant advise and offer support.

Schedule another date not too far away to catch up to see how things are going.
