Thinking today of a tragedy that forever binds us with our 'neighbours across the bay', Southport. It's also the worst incident in RNLI history.

In December 1886, lifeboats from St Annes, Lytham and Southport launched to rescue the crew of the Mexico, a German barque being wrecked in a storm.

Only the Lytham boat returned.

27 brave lifeboatmen drowned, including the crew of the Laura Janet from St Annes on Sea.

Queen Victoria said: "A dreadful misfortune has happened on the Lancashire coast, the loss of lifeboats, and many lives, a terrible and inconceivable thing!"

Thinking also of the current crews on call over the festive season, and still guarding our sea and shore.

Over the next few days, there are people in St Annes on Sea who will get little or no time off.

Can we just take a minute to say a HUGE thank you to emergency workers, health and social care staff, and those who work in hospitality, under pressure to make sure everyone else has a good time!

Knowing this community, there will be people out cleaning the beach over Christmas too.

So, to everyone who goes that extra mile over Christmas and New Year in our lovely town, we see you, and we are grateful.

EXCITING NEWS to end the year.....

The St Annes International Kite Festival - our most popular and ever-growing FREE event - is confirmed for 2026, and the dates have been set!

The festival has to sit well with tide times, so for next year it's 4th to 6th September - put that date in your diary and spread the word.

Also confirmed is the spectacular Friday night illuminated kite flight. There will be a fairground on the beach again, street food on the Prom and possibly some additional activities.

This incredible event would not be possible without a great deal of hard work and dedication from SmileFactor10 and Fylde Council's Discover Fylde team. THANK YOU!

Apparently the chances of a white Christmas are small.

Perhaps January will bring days like this again...one of the most incredible days spent walking around St Annes on Sea in the early hours.

Mistletoe and wine....and they all had a good time.. when Cliff Richards and The Shadows regularly said 'we're all going on a summer holiday' in St Annes on Sea.

The hugely respected singer and his famous backing group are pictured in the garden of their rented home in Folkstone Road in the 60s, and on our amazing beach.

They loved riding horses from the stables that used to be behind The Vic pub too.

Clearly from the newspaper quote, Cliff loved his stays here. Wonder if he has snuck back for a visit?

Did you ever see Cliff or someone else famous in St Annes?

Some incredible Christmas coastal creations by the talented Beach4Art family.

Maybe in 2026 St Annes on Sea could host a massive beach art festival, and we could attract them here.

The sand artist Manu was a big hit at the kite festival last year.

Excellent news about the future of St Annes swimming pool!

Fylde Council has announced that 'preferred bidder' Places Leisure will take over operation from 1st April 2026.

The current operator, YMCA, will continue until then, but chose not to bid for a new contract.

The council has already committed to spending £1.9 million on essential works at the seafront 'baths' in St Annes. Places Leisure, which operates 100 leisure facilities in the UK, has pledged to further "enhance the swimming experience for residents and visitors alike".

This indoor pool is an important asset for the town, so it's great to know it has a 'solid' future.

More planned changes to the town centre of St Annes on Sea will result in construction work starting 9th February 2026, and continuing for up to seven months.

One part of this is the 'Pier Link' project. This aims to make the transition between the beach and the Square smoother and more attractive. It appears to include a new crossing, planters and other street furniture that make this section of road (passed the Lord Derby) less 'bland'.

The second part runs in conjunction with the completion of The Sanctuary, the new luxury spa and hospitality venue being created in the old 'JR Taylor' building. That is an exciting private investment, but it has sadly meant disruption for businesses on Garden Street.

"The Garden Street Project" will see £1.5m (funded by Fylde Council and Fylde UK Shared Prosperity funding) spent on making the transition between the Square and Ashton Gardens smoother and more attractive.

One of the first things people worry about when they hear of change, is losing the Victorian heritage at the heart of St Annes on Sea. Nothing in the plans disrupts the lovely architecture, and in fact, the plans seem to reinforce the ethos of 'garden town by the sea'.

These developments are coming - and they are part of a MasterPlan which aims to create a more resilient, versatile and vibrant seaside resort. It can't stand still, if wants to survive.

Please direct questions and concerns to Fylde Council. You can visit their website for more information - https://new.fylde.gov.uk/business/projects/pier-link-and-garden-street/

Overly aggressive, rude or political comments will be removed - and don't mention roads and pot holes please, as they are Lancashire County Council's remit!
