I first became aware of the ‘Yoga for Healthy Lower Backs’ programme, whilst training as a yoga teacher. This evidence based 12 week course designed by Alison Trewhela and Anna Semlyen, was trialled by The University of York and Arthritis Research UK. The aim of this research was to prove that yoga could help with chronic or recurrent lower back pain and they proved it!

My tutor, Rosemary Bennett, would share with us some exercises to help restore and strengthen the lower back area. One exercise in particular stayed with me and I use it in my own class today, it’s called the Sacroiliac Stabiliser (or as I sometimes call it, Squeezey Bum Time - IYKYK!)

I spent an amazing day training with Anna Semlyen yesterday and I’ve found a new confidence in my ability to teach yoga safely ❤️

If you’ve never tried yoga before, it can seem a little daunting. I get it and I want to assure you that yoga is not about all those fancy poses you see online. You do not have to be super bendy to reap the benefits of yoga. What you do need though, is a bloody good sense of humour 😂. If that’s you, come along and I’ll teach you the basic postures to give you all the flexibility and strength you’ll need. I’ll also prescribe a good dose of relaxation at the end. Sound good? I’ll see you later.

The practice of gratitude is something I like to offer at the end of my yoga class, when the mind is still and thoughts run clear. Research suggests that being thankful regularly offers many positive health benefits. It boosts our mood, improves sleep, strengthens our immunity, helps us de-stress and live a more fulfilling and happy life.

What are you grateful for today? X

P.s. I’m not perfect and even I have to work at it, but seeing this today certainly helped change my perspective on a few things 😅

We’ve been exploring ‘Pigeon Pose’ this week or Eka Pada Rajakapotasana in Sanskrit. It’s a wonderful hip opener, which not only helps to release tension around the hips and piriformis but it also unleashes a lot of stored emotion there, so don’t be surprised if you find this happens. It’s believed that when we’re stressed we contract our hips, locking in negative energy and the emotions that come with it. I personally find this pose to be a great way to stretch the glutes and lower back too.

It’s not the best pose for anyone who suffers with knee pain, so an alternative would be to lie on your back and thread through ‘Eye of The Needle’.

Here’s a 📸 from my ‘Yoga for Men’ class, we can also use props to give us access to the pose.

I'm slightly late with this but Happy New Year everyone! I'm sure I'm not the only person who started 2024 with good intentions, only to realise in week two that all I've done is create a wealth of unnecessary pressure on myself. Thank goodness for yoga and Eckhart Tolle as a reminder to live in the present moment.

It's good to have goals but we need a clear path and course of action. "How" is always more important than the "what". So maybe your goal is to master Bakasana this year for instance. How are you going to do that? Next time you join me in class see if you can give more attention to the doing, than to the result that you want. Listen and feel without judgement each precise moment in class. Don't allow your thoughts to run away in to a movie playing out in the mind. Let those thoughts melt away and bring your focus back to the NOW. When you enjoy the journey, you'll find you'll reach your destination with ease.

"As soon as you honour the present moment, all unhappiness and struggle dissolve, and life begins to flow with joy and ease. The moment your attention turns to the Now, you feel a presence, a stillness, a peace." Eckhart Tolle. The Power of Now. 2020. Pg.56
