reached out this morning to seek input and advice regarding a client’s injury recovery and the most appropriate exercise strategies to support their ongoing rehabilitation. (Client consent provided)

I strongly value collaboration with other healthcare providers to ensure our clients remain central to their recovery journey and feel empowered throughout the process.

A simple yet effective guide I often use to support injury recovery and exercise guidance is the Traffic Light System.

This approach helps clients clearly understand and self-monitor their symptoms and activity tolerance, allowing them to stay active while reducing the risk of aggravation.

This framework supports active recovery and encourages self-efficacy, helping clients balance rest and activity safely during exercise.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve had several conversations with clients who are still being told that pain always equals damage, or that repeated treatments alone will “fix” their pain.

Unfortunately, scaremongering and passive care are still common in healthcare. This can leave patients feeling fearful, dependent, and without the tools they need to move forward.

The truth is, chronic pain after injury is real, but it doesn’t always mean ongoing harm. Education and empowerment are just as important as treatment.

That’s why I put together this simple guide for clients living with chronic pain — to help explain what’s happening in the body, reassure that movement is safe, and encourage self-confidence in recovery.

💡 Hopefully, it will bring clarity and reassurance to those who need it most.

Are you a runner and considering strength training? (you should!)

Unsure where to start and bombarded with overly complicated exercises on social media. All too often such exercises are just for likes and follows, with little evidence to back up their use.

KEEP IT SIMPLE!

* Plan a routine 👍🏻
* Stay consistent 👍🏻
* Gradually progress sessions 👍🏻

Fixed weight machines are a great starting point, evidence suggests these exercises alone (see videos) will meet the strength requirements of most runners.

* 6- 15 reps 👍🏻 whatever number you decide upon just ensure final 1-3 reps are close to failure.

* 1-5 sets 👍🏻 1 set is sufficient for beginners.

Last but not least, don’t worry about the weight you are lifting, it’s only there as a method to measure progress.
