Biofluorescent Britain - A handful of the biofluorescent characters found right here in the UK. You don't have to leave the island to find colourful, glowing plants, fungi, lichens and animals.

Biofluorescence turns the ordinary into something extraordinary: from common garden snails that glow yellow, native orchids, green mushrooms and flowers that look like they have electricity running through them.

Shine the right type of light on the world and it turns the world of colour upside down.

Glowing caterpillars can be found right around the world, but glowing silk is a new one for me.

Anyone seen anything like this before?

After dark at Cambridge Botanical Gardens.

All this week, we have brought our UV lights over and been offering biofluorescent night walks as a part of Twilight at the Museums in Cambridge.

These glasshouses sure hold a whole lot of glowing botanical secrets from around the world.

A sneak preview of the Alpine glasshouse which turned up some stunning coloured leaves and little gemstone-like flowers.

Down by the edge of a waterfall you can find special areas known as splash zones. They are kept perpetually wet by the water coming off the falls. Making them the ideal home for a wide range of interesting bryophytes.

A number of these moisture loving bryophytes such as spaghnum moss and many species of Liverworts are biofluorescent superstars, lighting up the night in a wide range of bright colours.

Shine a UV torch around and you might just discover your very own magical wall of glowing colour.

Rainbow rocks in the Pacific Northwest of America. A stunning range of biofluorescent liverworts, lichens, algae and plants. Up near the water, liverwort diversity was much higher, and it is these ancient plants that really give this scene its diverse mix of colours.

Highly underrated and not well known. Liverworts are absolute superstars of colour when it comes to biofluorescence.

I spent the month of April last year interviewing researchers at universities around the US for the book, managing to squeeze in a few side trips along the way. This was the biggest one, a lifelong dream of visiting the Pacific Northwest.

I spent a week driving around night after night in search of biofluorescence. For 6 days it was a little disappointing, some beautiful fluorescence, but lots of non-glowing mosses dominating every scene. No mega shows of colour. Until on the final night, I climbed up a waterfall and found this. A 20 metre squared area packed full of colour. A true rainbow of every colour shining in all it’s glory.
