Biofluorescent Velvet worm - The winner of this years bug of the year competition in New Zealand.

Velvet worms have remained morphologically similar for over 500 million years, making them one of the few surviving links between marine lobopodians and modern terrestrial arthropods.

They capture prey by spraying jets of sticky slime from glands just below their antennae. The slime shoots out in a rapid zigzag motion, entangling insects in midair. Once their quarry is immobilised, they inject it with saliva to liquefy its insides.

Glowy Mushrooms!

A wonderful Fungi by Day & Night walk yesterday alongside our good friend Jon Tyler.

Together, we are currently exploring Biofluorescence in Brittlegill mushrooms. A group of mushrooms that can often be hard to tell apart in the field, until you see their glow.... It turns out most of them have a distinct fluorescence.

The large majority have fluorescent blue-purple caps and white-yellow gills, the shades and intensity of blues and yellows vary widely. And the odd few that don't have these features stand out even more, such as the glowy green gills of the Charcoal burner in the video.

Holocanthella spp. - Giant springtails - Relative giants, they are the largest springtails in the world.

3rd place winner of this years Bug of the year competition in New Zealand. What a fantastic idea to have a bug of the year competition to raise awareness of these vital and all too often overlooked part of the environment.
