There’s been a lot of conversation recently about maternity care in the UK, and it’s understandable that many women are feeling unsure about what they can and can’t decline.
Let’s gently clear something up 🤍
Procedures such as membrane sweeps, vaginal examinations and induction of labour are options. Not obligations. You can say yes. You can say no. You can say “not right now.” You can say “I need more information.”
Informed consent isn’t just a form to sign, it’s a process. It means:
✨ You understand why something is being offered
✨ You know the benefits and the risks
✨ You’re aware of alternatives
✨ You’re given time (where clinically appropriate) to decide
This is where a birth plan becomes so powerful.
A clear, personalised birth plan:
• Opens up conversations early
• Reduces misunderstandings in labour
• Encourages shared decision-making
• Can lower the likelihood of unnecessary intervention by ensuring choices are discussed, not assumed
• Helps you feel calm, prepared and confident
Birth plans aren’t about being “difficult” or rigid. They’re about informed choice and collaborative care. Sometimes the safest decision is to say yes. Sometimes it’s to explore alternatives. Sometimes it’s to wait and review.
Your voice matters in every scenario.
Confidence doesn’t mean refusing care, it means understanding your options and making the decision that feels right for you and your baby, with the right information in front of you.
