Yesterday, on Armistice Day, at 11am, we had the honour of paging an RAF Veteran on his final journey past his former homes.

As the procession paused and the world fell silent for the tribute, we paid our respects — not only to him, but to all who have served and sacrificed.

A fitting farewell on a day of remembrance.

“At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.” 🌹

Lovely to see the community together for this and the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts all in uniform. Maverick particularly enjoyed this one. Thank you Rev. Andrew Tapsell

🌿 A Message of Reassurance 🌿

With funeral standards appearing in the news this week, we want to take a moment to reassure the families we serve.

At Gedge & Sons Funeral Directors, your trust means everything to us. We are proud members of both the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF) and also the National Association of funeral directors (NAFD)

Every step of our process — from the moment your loved one is brought into our care to the careful handling of ashes — is fully documented and carried out with dignity. Our mortuary and ashes storage facilities are managed to provide a clear, secure, and respectful audit trail.

We are regularly inspected by and approved by both SAIF and NAFD and and strictly follow their Codes of Practice, ensuring the highest levels of care, respect, and professionalism at all times.

Your peace of mind matters deeply to us.
Always professional. Always caring. Always here for you.

Cocooning Through Grief

Grief transforms us.
For a time we cocoon,
folding inward,
seeking the smallest,
safest chamber of the heart.

It is not hiding,
not retreat,
but something elemental,
a return to the inner sanctuary,
where silence keeps company with sorrow.

There, time moves differently.
Hours stretch like threads of dusk,
days gather into hush,
the world’s noise
falling away.

Inside the cocoon,
grief does its secret work.
The old life dissolves,
once familiar, now unrecognizable.
We remember who we were,
but that self feels distant,
belonging to another.

The one we loved lingers still,
stitched into memory,
woven throughout our daily lives
Their absence hollows,
reshapes,
leaving an ache
both wound and witness.

Even here,
change stirs quietly.
The stillness gathers us,
slowly, gently,
like threads woven
into a new tapestry.

We cannot rush it.
We cannot command it.
We can only move
with it,
trusting the rhythm of its unfolding.

And then,
at some unexpected moment,
the cocoon begins to thin.
Light seeps through
the fragile seams.

The heart,
once too heavy to lift,
leans toward the light.
We blink against a world
the same,
yet utterly changed.

Emerging,
we carry both the ache and the light,
a new way of being,
fragile,
resilient,
transformed,
and in some hidden way,
more luminous
for having passed through the dark.

🌿 A Quiet Place to Grieve, When Time Didn’t Allow Before 🌿

Sometimes life moves too fast, and the chance to say goodbye, to gather as a family and share memories, slips quietly away. At St Faiths Crematorium , we hold space for those precious moments—offering families who have had a direct cremation the opportunity to come together, to cry, to laugh, light candles and to honour the life that touched their hearts.

This is a gentle invitation to pause, to feel deeply, and to create a memorial service when the time is right for you—whether that’s days, weeks, or even months later.

Each day, we can offer a memorial space from 9.30am or seasonally, an option to hold a candle lit vigil at 4.30pm—a quiet moment of remembrance and light to honour those loved and lost.

You are not alone. Your memories, your love, and your grief deserve their own space to breathe.

Options include family-led services or you could use the services of a local celebrant or minister. We can assist with organising music and visual tributes of beautiful memories with you.

🕊️ Here, healing begins in your own time.

The grief iceberg

There is so much more to grief than what people might see 💜

Grief can be like an iceberg- what we show to the world is just the tip but beneath the surface there can be so much happening which often goes unseen.
