I am eternally grateful that I have problem-free feet....well, almost problem-free. They do tend to get very dry and rough with a crack on the ball of each foot just beneath the big toe. But a regular shave, file and moisturiser takes care of that!
To show my gratitude and appreciation for and of my feet, I decided that I needed to get walking (OK, yes I admit, my ever increasing waistline had something to do with this decision as well...it's not fair that my feet should have to carry all those extra pounds/kilos which seem to just keep piling on as I get older!). For the past couple of years I have spent most of my time caring for a 93yr old gentleman in Berkshire whose walking pace has been reduced to snail pace and for my 74yr old husband in Norfolk who has Parkinson's and whose walking pace has also slowed down to what I would call a stroll.
I found that I was getting very headachy, tired, and suffering various aches and pains, especially in winter when the heating is always on. Then I noticed that on the few occasions when I walked to the shop and back (a 15min walk each way) that I felt somewhat refreshed. But what to do to cajole me into walking more regularly?
Then I saw a special offer in a magazine I had bought, for a Garmin Vivofit. All I wanted was something that could tell the time, count my steps, record the distance and count the calories used (the Vivofit is the basic of Garmins range but it suits me fine...I really don't want to be reading my emails when I'm out on a walk!) but I can also connect it to a heart rate monitor, and it can record my sleep patterns which I find very interesting.
AND, it has a thin, solid red line which creeps up to tell you that you have been sitting around for an hour, followed by shorter red dashes to indicate every 15 min thereafter of sitting around. Someone said that that would drive them mad but it's not "in your face" and I have found that when I glance at it to see the time, it serves as a reminder to get moving (OK, it "guilts" me into moving!). After moving around, the red line goes away, until you sit around again!
AND, I have now found out that I can connect to other people and we can actually inspire one another and/or compete with one another. So here I am, in the UK connected to a friend in South Africa. Isn't technology amazing!
And I treat my feet by buying the best and most comfortable walking shoes/boots that I can afford.
