The below picture is two grommets found within a patients ear canal, embedded in wax. These were inserted when the patient was 4 years old (now 25 years old) . Likely fell out appx 6 months after they were inserted and have been stuck within the ear canal ever since.

This patient had thought they suffered with hearing loss nearly all of their life. Once both the grommets and wax were removed this patient was able to hear clearly again.

We have seen quite a few fungal ear infections recently, which have been repeatedly treated unsuccessfully with antibacterial ear drops. If this is the case the ear will need to be swabbed to confirm if the infection is bacterial or fungal. As anti fungal ear drops will be needed if the infection is fungal.

We have removed quite a few cotton buds from people's ear canals recently. Some where the person was not even aware there was one stuck.

Please do not use cotton buds in your ears. It impacts the wax, causes trauma and the tip can become dislodged and stuck within the ear canal.

Thankfully at norwich community ear care we are usually able to remove said cotton bud. But if not this would be a specialist ENT procedure with potential long waits to get it removed.
