It's that time of year again! 🌃

Last Sunday, the clocks went back an hour, signalling earlier sunsets and the start of long, dark winter evenings.

If you’re not a fan of the darkness creeping in earlier and earlier during the winter months, you’re not alone.

While this daylight saving measure is supposed to give us lighter mornings, the downside is that we are faced with dark afternoons, which disrupt many people’s routines.

And this is even more pronounced for people living with dementia.

Darkness earlier in the day can distort your loved one with dementia’s understanding of time and the routines associated with each part of the day.

They may become tired and sleep earlier, only to wake up more in the night.

Or become confused and disorientated at home if certain routines are not being followed or needs met.

People living with dementia may also experience sundowning - a collection of symptoms and behaviours that happen at dusk and during the evening, causing anxiety or agitation often associated to feeling that they are in the wrong place. These delusions can further disrupt the evening and sleep patterns, which has a negative impact on the person during the day too.

Can you remember the hit song sensation of your youth?

Or which sounds or smells transport you to the place where you grew up?

While we may all react to sights, sounds and smells, it doesn’t mean we have the same reference points or experiences.

In fact, the memories we have can all depend on where we grew up, as well as our language, our faith or our socioeconomic background - our cultural heritage.

Yet these memories get stored away, and sometimes they need a bit of help to be brought back to the surface of our minds - especially for those people who are living with dementia.

And if many of those memories where formed in a different country across the globe, there can certainly be no one size fits all to reminiscence in dementia care.

This October marks Black History Month and the theme of 'Reclaiming Narratives' - so we want to shout about the amazing work that people, such as out next webinar guest Carl Case, are doing to bring more cultural inclusivity to dementia care and help people reclaim their own narratives, even when experiencing cognitive decline.

By supporting people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic backgrounds to connect with their heritage, language and culture in dementia care settings, families and caregivers can support better reminiscence for their loved one's and communities and break down barriers when it comes to dementia, making room for more conversations and better understanding.

We can’t wait to learn more about Carl Case’s work creating Culturally Appropriate Resources in our free webinar next Wednesday. You can still sign up by following the link: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/1043953822987?aff=oddtdtcreator

We are thrilled to be talking to Carl Case in our next SweetPea Care Webinar on Dementia and the African Caribbean Community, discussing how to develop meaningful engagement through culturally appropriate resources..

People from African and Caribbean communities are 22% more likely to develop dementia than other backgrounds, as well as die at a younger age with the condition, perhaps without ever receiving culturally appropriate care and support. (https://lnkd.in/eCr2CTwh)

In his roles at and (Winners of the 'Outstanding Provider of Dementia Care in the Community' award at the ) Carl supports older people from African and Caribbean communities, their families and caregivers to access culturally relevant resources in dementia care.

These culturally tailored resources speak to the experiences of people who grew up in different countries and cultures around the world and moved to the UK as young adults to start a new life.

Carl has created resources that aim to capture the different music, sights and sounds that would have been a part of their early adulthood and help them reconnect to their younger memories and benefit from the power of reminiscence.

He will explain how these inclusive resources are essential for person-centred dementia care to people of different backgrounds, to help them connect and engage in a way that is meaningful to them.

Whatever your background, having an understanding of culturally appropriate resources means you can use them to create a truly inclusive and person-centred dementia care approach for those you support.
