Healthy boundaries aren’t about pushing people away — they’re about protecting your wellbeing, your energy, and your sense of self.
Many of us were never taught how to set boundaries, and instead learned to over‑give, over‑explain, or ignore our own needs to keep the peace.

Understanding the different types of boundaries — physical, emotional, mental, time and material — can be a powerful first step in feeling more grounded, respected, and in control of your life.

In my counselling practice here in Norwich, Norfolk, I support adults who struggle with people‑pleasing, burnout, anxiety, and relationship stress. Together, we explore where your boundaries feel too loose, too rigid, or simply unclear — and how to build healthier ones that honour who you are.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, drained, or unsure how to say “no” without guilt, therapy can help you reconnect with your needs and create relationships that feel safer and more balanced.

You deserve boundaries that protect your peace.

🌿 Feeling anxious? Here are small shifts that can make a big difference
Anxiety can pull us into habits that feel protective in the moment but keep us stuck over time.
This post offers gentle alternatives — not to “fix” you, but to help you respond with more awareness and compassion.

🔄 Instead of believing every anxious thought…
Try questioning it. Not every thought is truth.

🔄 Instead of avoiding discomfort…
Try facing it in small, safe steps. Anxiety shrinks when we move toward life, not away from it.

🔄 Instead of judging yourself for feeling overwhelmed…
Try offering kindness. Anxiety is a signal, not a failure.

🔄 Instead of rushing decisions to escape the feeling…
Try slowing down. Choose with intention, not fear.

If anxiety is affecting your relationships, confidence or day‑to‑day life, counselling can help you understand what’s happening beneath the surface and build tools that genuinely support you.

🌿 How to Choose the Right Counsellor or Therapist
Choosing a counsellor can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re already struggling. Here are a few things that can help you feel confident and safe in your choice.

✔️ Check their professional registration
Look for a therapist who is BACP or UKCP registered. This means they’ve completed accredited training, work within strict ethical guidelines, and there’s a clear complaints process if you ever need it.

✔️ Make sure they have insurance & a DBS check
These are basic safeguards that protect you as a client.

✔️ Use trusted directories
Websites like BACP, UKCP, Psychology Today, and Counselling Directory verify qualifications for you — a quick way to ensure your therapist is properly trained.

🤝 Most importantly: do you feel you can connect with them
Research shows the therapeutic relationship is the biggest factor in healing. Speak to two or three counsellors before deciding. Notice who you feel safe with, who listens, and who you can imagine opening up to.

If you’re looking for a counsellor in Norwich and want to explore whether we might be a good fit, you’re welcome to get in touch.

Healthy self‑talk isn’t about being positive all the time — it’s about being kind, curious, and realistic with yourself.
So many of us fall into harsh self‑criticism, all‑or‑nothing thinking, or catastrophising without even noticing. Over time, this can chip away at confidence, increase anxiety, and keep the nervous system stuck in survival mode.

Learning to speak to yourself with compassion is a powerful part of healing.
It helps you feel safer inside your own mind, reduces overwhelm, and supports emotional resilience.

In my counselling practice here in Norwich, Norfolk, I help adults explore the inner dialogue shaped by past experiences, trauma, and old patterns of protection. Together, we work towards building a more grounded, balanced, and supportive relationship with yourself — one that allows you to grow rather than shut down.

If you’re struggling with anxiety, self‑criticism, or feeling overwhelmed, counselling can offer a safe, confidential space to understand what’s happening beneath the surface and begin to heal.

You deserve a voice inside you that feels like support, not pressure.

Why Counselling?
So many of us carry parts of ourselves that were once judged, dismissed, or simply too much for the people around us. To stay safe — emotionally, socially, or even physically — we learned to hide those parts away.

But when our experiences, emotions, or needs are ignored or invalidated, it can quietly erode our sense of self. It can leave us feeling ashamed, disconnected, lonely, or unsure of who we really are.

This is especially true for men, who are so often taught not to be vulnerable or express emotion. The heartbreaking reality of male su***de rates shows just how damaging that silence can be.

Counselling offers something different.
A safe, confidential, compassionate space where the parts of you that were once pushed away can finally be seen, heard, and understood.
A space to explore how past experiences still shape your present.
A space to reconnect with yourself — with more compassion, clarity, and wholeness.

If you’re in Norwich or Norfolk and you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or ready to understand yourself on a deeper level, I’m here to support you.

You don’t have to do this alone.

🌿 Understanding Your Window of Tolerance
When life feels overwhelming, it’s not because you’re “failing” — it’s often your nervous system doing its best to cope.
The Window of Tolerance is a simple way of understanding why you might feel anxious, shut down, or disconnected at times.

🔥 Hyperarousal — Fight or Flight
This is when everything feels “too much.”
You might feel anxious, tense, on edge, overwhelmed or easily triggered.
Your system is stuck on high alert.

🌱 Window of Tolerance — Regulated & Grounded
This is your optimal zone.
You can think clearly, feel present, stay connected, and respond rather than react.
Therapy helps widen this window so life feels more manageable.

❄️ Hypoarousal — Freeze or Shutdown
This is when everything feels “not enough.”
You might feel numb, spaced out, disconnected, drained or detached.
Your system is trying to protect you by switching off.

💬 How counselling can help
In our work together, we explore what pushes you out of your window — and what helps bring you back in.
I offer a calm, relational and compassionate space where you can understand your patterns, feel more grounded, and reconnect with yourself at a pace that feels safe.

🌿 Looking for a counsellor in Norwich who offers a safe, genuine and deeply relational space?
I’m Rowan, a relational integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor based in Norwich, and I support adults who want to understand themselves more fully, heal old patterns, and feel more grounded in who they are.

What does that actually mean?
🤝 Relational
The relationship between us is at the heart of the work.
Healing happens through a safe, respectful and authentic connection — not just techniques.
How you feel with me, how you express yourself, and what happens between us can offer powerful insight into patterns that show up in your life.

🧩 Integrative
There’s no one‑size‑fits‑all approach.
I draw from different therapeutic ideas and tailor the work to you — your needs, your pace, your story.

🧠 Psychotherapeutic
Our past shapes how we see ourselves and the world.
Together, we explore deeper feelings, experiences and patterns so that real, lasting change becomes possible — always at a pace that feels safe.

🌱 What I offer
A calm, compassionate and inclusive space where you can be yourself, feel heard, and make sense of what’s going on beneath the surface.

✨ An emotional regulation check-in

When emotions feel overwhelming, it can help to slow down and reconnect with yourself. Sometimes just pausing and asking a few simple questions can create space between feeling and reacting.

You might ask yourself:

✔️ Have I named the emotion I’m feeling right now?
✔️ Did I take a slow breath before reacting?
✔️ Are my thoughts facts, or are they fears?
✔️ Have I moved my body to release tension today?
✔️ Have I honoured any boundaries I needed to set?

Emotional regulation isn’t about suppressing feelings — it’s about understanding them and responding with care.

Therapy can help you explore your emotional patterns, understand where they come from, and develop ways to respond to yourself with greater compassion.

If you’re feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or struggling with difficult emotions, counselling can provide a safe space to talk.

Many of us develop ways of coping with difficult emotions — some help us heal, while others keep us stuck.

Sometimes we might notice patterns like:
• Pushing feelings down
• Keeping ourselves constantly busy
• Putting others’ needs before our own
• Feeling emotionally numb

These patterns often begin as ways to protect ourselves, but over time they can make it harder to truly process what we’re feeling.

Healthy coping can look different:
✨ Naming and understanding your emotions
✨ Learning gentle ways to soothe your nervous system
✨ Reaching out for support
✨ Allowing difficult feelings to move through rather than avoiding them

I can offer a safe, supportive space to explore these patterns, understand where they come from, and begin developing healthier ways of relating to yourself and others.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected contact me for support.

🌿 Understanding Your Fear Responses Is the First Step Toward Change
When stress or overwhelm hits, your mind and body move into old survival patterns — fight, flight, freeze, or fawn. These responses aren’t flaws or failures; they’re protective strategies you learned long before you had the chance to choose differently.

But when these patterns start shaping your relationships, decisions, or sense of self, they can leave you feeling stuck, exhausted, or disconnected.

Counselling offers a safe, grounded space to explore where these responses come from, how they show up in your life today, and what it might feel like to respond from a place of choice rather than fear. You don’t have to navigate this alone.

What You Can Control Matters More Than You Think
When life feels overwhelming, it’s easy to get caught up in things you can’t change: other people’s behaviour, the past, or unexpected events.

But your power lies in the choices you make today: how you respond, the boundaries you set, and the habits that protect your mental energy.

Focusing on what’s within your control can bring clarity, calm, and a sense of steadiness when everything else feels uncertain.

If you’re struggling to navigate that balance, counselling can help you understand your patterns, strengthen your boundaries, and reconnect with yourself in a grounded, compassionate way.

🌿 Lesser‑Known Signs of Anxiety — And How You Can Support Yourself
Anxiety doesn’t always look like racing thoughts or panic. It can show up in subtle physical ways that leave you feeling confused or overwhelmed.

If you recognise any of these sensations, you’re not alone — and support is available.

At Rowan Shingler Counselling in Norwich, I offer a calm, compassionate space to explore what’s going on beneath the surface and understand how anxiety is affecting your life.

💚 5 gentle ways to support yourself when anxiety shows up
These aren’t treatments — just simple, grounding ideas many people find helpful:

Slow your breathing
Try lengthening your exhale. It can help your body shift out of “threat mode.”

Name what you’re feeling
Putting words to sensations can reduce the intensity and help you feel more anchored.

Ground through your senses
Notice five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear… a simple way to reconnect with the present.

Move your body gently
A short walk, stretching, or shaking out your hands can release built‑up tension.

Reach out to someone you trust
Sharing how you feel can reduce isolation and help you feel more supported.

If anxiety is impacting your daily life, counselling can help you understand your experiences, build emotional resilience, and feel more in control.
