New NICE Guidance of ME/CFS Published

On the 29th October NICE published the long-awaited updated guidance on the diagnosis and management of ME/CFS. These new NICE guidelines are the result of a thorough consultation process, which aimed to consider both the scientific evidence and also the ‘lived experience’ of those with ME/CFS.

The OHC was delighted to have an opportunity to be part of the consultation process on this new ME/CFS guidance and we are so pleased that the guidance recognises ME/CFS as a complex and chronic medical condition, with the potential to exert a profound impact on daily life.

The revised guidance also acknowledges the fundamental importance of remaining within the ‘energy envelope’ and pacing effectively – this is of course a concept that OHC have incorporated into our protocols for many years. The most significant and welcome development though, is the removal of all recommendations for Graded Exercise Therapy (GET) as a treatment for ME/CFS patients.

For more information you can read the new NICE guidelines here: https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng206

As with fibro flares, those of us with CFS will also cycle into chronic fatigue syndrome symptoms due to stress, weather, trauma, or lowered immune resistance.

"Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh.

There was a pause.

"Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.

"No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do."

"That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend.

"What are you doing?" asked Pooh.

"Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either.

"But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh."

And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right."

Sending thoughts to those having a Difficult Day today and hope you have your own Piglet to sit beside you 🧡

The four key fibromyalgia symptoms are: widespread body pain, unrelenting fatigue, cognitive issues or brain fog, and unrefreshing sleep.

However, fibromyalgia never comes by itself. There are usually lots of other things that happen with it: digestive issues, headaches, thyroid issues, adrenal issues, sleep conditions, and all kinds of other stuff.

When you were diagnosed, how many of these symptoms did you have? Or if you haven't been diagnosed, are you experiencing any of these?

I go more in depth about getting diagnosed in Episode 4 of the Fibromyalgia Podcast. Check it out here: https://FibromyalgiaPodcast.com/4
