The verdict into the death of the tragic case of Kiena Dawes has been handed down. This is a woman who died after a long history of domestic abuse. My heart cries for the family. They have the life sentence- they’ll never see their loved one again. This case teaches us that we must redouble our efforts to prevent cases like this from happening again.
I speak as a personal trainer. Before lockdown I did self defence classes and I had a lot of victims of domestic abuse on my books.
This is my advice to prevent something like this from happening. It is very cynical but if implemented would go a long way to preventing this from happening.
Never move in with a partner unless you have a legally binding pre-moving in agreement drawn up by a solicitor.
Never move in with a partner unless you are highly skilled at a full contact martial art and your partner knows you can give a good thumping if need be.
Never move in with a partner unless you have your own bank account which your partner has no access to.
Never move in with a partner unless you have your own source of income wholly independent of your partner.
(3) and (4) are vital to prevent what I call domestic financial terrorism. That is where the abuser says to the victim “leave me but how will you pay the bills?” The victim is commonly powerless without a source of income and a separate bank account.
I urge everyone to learn the international distress signal for help. You make eye contact with someone, you put your thumb in the palm of your hand and then close your fingers. If you see that sign, that person needs help urgently.
The other thing is the call for Uncle Stan. If someone says please call Uncle Stan it means they are in danger. STAN means Send The Authorities Now.
Home Secretary Priti Patel started the system where if the above two are not available please dial 999, then press 55 on your phone. The police will realise you are in danger and can’t talk and they’ll trace your phone.
One day I will be a billionaire through my forex trading and other sources of income and I will ensure there is a safe house in every city in the UK for victims of domestic abuse and on getting there we'll financially support them until they are back on their feet. Watch this space.
In the meantime please look at these factsheets.
