We’re so happy to be reopening to look after you all...this is the words from another salon which ring so true in today’s climate

I wasn’t sure that we, as an industry, could hold our breath much longer.

As the news came from Boris that we could reopen, we exhaled a huge sigh of relief.

It’s very difficult you see, being a salon owner.

We don’t do our job because we are chasing millions.

We do our job because making people look and feel good, makes us feel good too.

And isn’t doing a job that you LOVE, quite the dream?

The thing is, when we close, we can’t do that.

That deeply rooted drive inside us that pushes us to learn, learn and learn some more so we can be the best therapist or stylist you’ve ever met...

That bubble of happiness inside us that bursts with pride every time you walk out of our salon feeling like you can do anything…

That excitement that fizzes over when a new face walks through the door, ready to start their journey with us….

It all disappears.

We live and breathe our salon.

We live and breathe our roles.

We are the Salon industry.

A beautiful, sparkling, fun, kind-hearted industry that runs deeply through our veins.

And as our doors re-open, we will be ready and waiting to be there for you.

Because, here’s the thing.

Just think of how many thousands of people this man helped get there weight under control, how many people avoided weight related problems and even early death for lots of people. We applaud you Dr Alan Howard AGED 91 👏👏👏 RIP

Team message: It is with a sad heart that we have to inform you that on Wednesday 24 June, Dr Alan Howard, the inventor of the Cambridge Diet, died peacefully at his home in France. He was 91 years old.

Dr Howard’s interest in obesity began from his own personal experience of being overweight and unhealthy in his 30s. In the 1970s he began his work looking to create what he called ‘The Perfect Diet’ at a time when little research was being done in this area.

Throughout the decade several ground-breaking clinical trials took place proving the safety and efficacy of Dr Howard’s very low-calorie diet formulation. In 1979 Dr Howard’s patents were licensed to a US company and the Cambridge Diet was launched to great fanfare and success in 1980.

In 1982 he created the Howard Foundation. This is a charitable trust supporting bio-medical research at the University of Cambridge, and which has provided three buildings at Downing College between 1987 and 2009. Many UK Consultant and International Distributor events have been held in the College over the years, with these spectacular buildings as their backdrop.

After the success of the Diet in the US, Dr Howard, through the Howard Foundation, was inspired to launch the brand and business in the UK in 1984, alongside his brother Roger Howard and with his son Jon Howard as the very first UK Counsellor.

It was also a great success. In 1985 Denmark became the first overseas market and around the same time production moved to Phoenix Foods in Corby. In 1990 the Foundation purchased Phoenix Foods and renamed it Cambridge Manufacturing. Although greatly expanded, the company remains headquartered on the same site today. In fact, in 2017 Dr Howard attended an event here in Corby where we named one of our newest buildings in his honour.

In 2005, wanting to pursue new research opportunities, the Howard Foundation sold the Cambridge Diet business to a management buyout. In 2018 Dr Howard, alongside other colleagues, published the results of a study into the use of certain nutritional compounds to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

Dr Howard published over 250 original articles in medical literature and authored and edited eight major books on coronary heart disease and obesity. He was also co-founder of the International Journal of Obesity.

The last time most Consultants and Distributors had an opportunity to meet Dr Howard was at the company’s 30th Anniversary event in 2014. He gave a wonderful speech saying how proud he was of the work they were doing and how amazed he was at how far his original idea had managed to travel.

He was a great man, a man of vision, tenacity, leadership and foresight, whose work has literally saved millions of people’s lives around the world.

I hope you will join with us in passing on our best wishes to Dr Howard’s family at this very sad time.
