Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity Raising funds for Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust to give patients the best possible care ✨🧡

Here at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Charity, we are dedicated to making a difference to the thousands of patients treated at our hospitals every year. Incredible things are happening across our hospitals each and every day, but there will always be a need for those added extras that can make all the difference to our patients. This is where our charity comes in; we’ve made it our mission to help fund the items at our hospitals which are over and above what the NHS can provide. We make this possible by raising vital funds to ensure our hospitals are equipped with the very latest in technology, enabling vital research and making our hospitals a little more comfortable for patients and their families. With your support, we can ensure that the patients treated at our hospital have the best possible care, in the very best facilities.

Today is Blue Monday - often described as the most challenging day of the year for mental wellbeing. Whether or not the label resonates, one thing is clear: many people are struggling, and the need for timely, compassionate mental health support has never been greater 🙏

Across Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, we are an accredited Mental Health First Aid England training provider and are working towards training close to 200 Mental Health First Aiders based across the Trust.

These colleagues will play a vital role in recognising the signs of poor mental health, offering non-judgemental support, creating safe spaces to talk, and signposting people to professional help and support.

To support the delivery of Mental Health First Aider training across the Trust, our hospital charity has funded 85 Mental Health First Aider workbooks at a total cost of £2,655.

These essential training materials are enabling 85 additional colleagues to complete the course and support our ambition to increase the number of Mental Health First Aiders across Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, strengthening mental health support for staff throughout the organisation.

On Blue Monday, awareness is everywhere. Let’s make sure action follows. Supporting practical resources like Mental Health First Aider training materials is a tangible way to turn conversations about mental health into meaningful, lasting impact.

Because mental health matters - not just today, but every day 🧡

💙 Success Story 💙

Our VR Headset is making a meaningful difference for children undergoing treatment at Royal Preston Hospital Children’s Unit.

This innovative technology is used as distraction therapy, helping to reduce stress and anxiety during difficult tests and procedures—moments that can feel overwhelming for any child.

When 10-year-old Noah Harwood arrived at the Children’s Unit this week with suspected meningitis, he was understandably frightened. As an autistic child, the unfamiliar environment and uncertainty quickly became overwhelming. His mum, Ashleigh, shared that Noah was visibly shaking and struggling to regulate his emotions.

As soon as Noah put on the VR headset, everything changed. He calmed almost instantly, fully absorbed in a different world—away from the noise, fear, and clinical surroundings. This allowed doctors to carry out the treatment he needed, calmly and safely.

And the impact didn’t stop there. Seeing Noah relax meant Ashleigh could finally take a breath too.

💬 “This is such an amazing piece of equipment. It will benefit so many families, especially those with additional needs or autism.”

Stories like Noah’s remind us why this equipment matters—not just for children, but for their families too. 💙

Thanks to generous fundraising by the wonderful MJH Accountants, our Motor Neurone Disease (MND) team at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has been able to purchase a second Neater Eater - specialist equipment that is already making a life-changing difference for people living with MND 🙌🧡

As MND progresses, many people lose the ability to lift their hands and arms to eat independently and can become reliant on family members or carers. The Neater Eater helps people maintain independence at mealtimes for as long as possible, allowing them to continue enjoying shared meals with loved ones while reducing reliance on others.

We currently have one Neater Eater out on loan, which has had an incredible impact. One patient was able to sit with his young family on Shrove Tuesday and eat pancakes independently - a moment that significantly improved his quality of life and allowed his wife to enjoy the meal alongside him rather than assisting with feeding.

Having now been able to purchase a second Neater Eater, the team can assess and support more patients who could benefit from this specialist equipment. It is often a last-resort option and can be used by people with very limited movement, including via voice control if needed.

Thank you again to MJH Accountants for helping us improve independence, dignity and quality of life for people living with MND 🥰

Over the Christmas period, our children’s wards at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust were treated to two very special visits that brought huge smiles to our young patients, their families and our staff! 💫🎄🧡

A big thank you to Mickey and Minnie Mouse from Mascots Delight, who once again spoilt us with a wonderful Christmas visit, handing out festive bags and spreading plenty of Disney cheer throughout the ward. Their visits have become a much-loved highlight and make such a difference to children spending time in hospital.

We’re also incredibly grateful to Fire Marshals Darren and Michael, who visited on 22nd December dressed as Santa and the Grinch!

They delivered toys to the Children’s Ward and Children’s A&E, stopped for photos with staff and visitors, and brought lots of laughter along the way - with Santa handing out gifts while the Grinch tried (unsuccessfully!) to steal them back 🎁

Thank you to everyone involved for helping to make Christmas that little bit brighter for our young patients. These moments of joy really do mean so much 🥰

A huge thank you to the incredible Rock Choir North West who visited our hospital over the Christmas period to perform festive songs for our staff! 🎶✨

Their uplifting performance brought so much joy and made for a truly memorable lunchtime. This award-winning choir goes out of their way every year to visit our hospitals and spread cheer through music - we’re so grateful for their continued support 🧡 Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

We’re delighted to share that for another year, our charity’s Give a Gift campaign has been a huge success! 👏🎁💫

Thanks to the incredible generosity of local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals, we were able to sort, pack and deliver over 1,000 gifts, ensuring that every patient spending Christmas Day at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust received a present. All wards across Preston and Chorley were stocked and ready for Christmas Day 🙌🎄

We’re so grateful to everyone who donated, supported and helped behind the scenes to make this possible. A special thank you to our campaign sponsor D&G Builders and Joiners, who donated £2,500 for the second year running, helping us purchase a large chunk of gifts for patients.

The kindness shown by our local community has been truly heart-warming. Thank you to everyone who helped spread a little extra Christmas cheer to our patients 🥰✨

Last week, we were delighted to welcome Charlotte Greenwood to our charity office, who came in to present a cheque following her incredible fundraising efforts. Charlotte ran the London Half Marathon in support of the Stroke Unit at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, in memory of her grandma, Gwyneth Greenwood, who sadly passed away earlier this year 🙏 🧡

Charlotte raised an impressive £736 through her fundraising, and together with donations made at Gwyneth’s funeral, this brought the total donated to the Stroke Unit to over £1,600!

We are extremely grateful to Charlotte and her family for choosing to support us, and for turning their loss into something that will help others. Thank you for your kindness, determination, and generosity 🥰

A huge thank you to everyone who donated, with special mentions to:

✨ Cash for Kids Lancashire - for donating a large number of toys for our Children’s Wards.
✨ Tesco Leyland Extra - thank you to Jean Bolton (Community Champion) who along with Tesco staff and customers, donated over 100 toys for Broadoaks via the in-store trolley collection.
✨ Sharon and Alex from Department for Work and Pensions - DWP – for donating chocolate oranges for staff on the Children’s Ward, a tradition they kindly continue every year.
✨ Eden Boy’s School - for donating treats and toys, beautifully made into Christmas hampers.
✨ Gafoor Pure Halal Ltd - for donating selection boxes for Children’s Services, supporting children on the ward and those attending clinics in the run-up to Christmas and on Christmas Day.
✨ VolkerStevin - with thanks to Jake Walker and Carley Plaw for their selection box donation for Children’s Services.

Because of this generosity, children and staff across our hospitals will feel extra special this Christmas. Thank you for making such a difference! 🧡🥰
