This week we’ve had a local armed forces coordinator from Preston North End doing some seated exercises with our residents.

We made this connection through our Veteran Friendly Framework award ceremony. He now plans to come in every Thursday afternoon and spend time with our residents doing a range of activities. This is something everyone really appreciates. Thankyou so much for dedicating your Thursday afternoons to us.

🙏❤️

Another lovely week to look forward to next week here at Hulton House.

As well as our regular weekly therapies, it’s animal therapy and a visit from Home Safari. It’s also Mother’s Day on Sunday March 15th and we’ll be sharing our love for the mother figures living and working in our homes, with a live performance from singer, Chloe Hart.

Don’t forget you are welcome to join in any of our activities and events. We positively encourage it!

Another beautiful piece of work has been created in today’s art therapy sessions.

There are some lovely details incorporated into the butterflies and flowers of this piece, a sign there has been lots of engagement today. Participants have been exercising their fine motors skills and demonstrating some excellent brush control.

There’s a lot more than meets the eye to art therapy sessions. One outcome is evident in the final piece of artwork, but these sessions are also about building confidence, encouraging engagement and the use of fine motor skills, opportunities to socialise and also a means of expression.

Our art therapy sessions are led by art therapist Jane, from Creative Mojo and are supported by our care team members. We run two, one hour sessions every Wednesday afternoon. Why not take part next time you’re visiting? You are more than welcome.

Today’s sport themed exercise therapy shows how once a resident engages they will, with encouragement, put it in the back of the net!

If you listen carefully you can hear the encouragement, not only from our coach Dan, but also from the other residents in the group session. They are also actively participating by focussing on watching and encouraging him too.

We have been on a roll today in sport themed exercise therapy! This was our third ‘Magic Moment’ of the session!!

This gentleman is usually in bed or asleep in his chair, but today he was awake and watching our other gents play football. As the ball came near to him. He kicked it back to Coach Dan and then that was it, he was kicking it back and forth much to the amazement of our team members!

It just goes to show that no matter how many times a resident might decline an activity, there is always a chance they will take part and actively engage one day.

Another ‘Magic Moment’ in sports themed exercise therapy!

This gentlemen usually declines to take part in activities as he is unable to focus. Today he not only took part, he found he was able to head the ball back to coach Dan. He kept on doing it too, which was just amazing for everyone to see!

Well done team! This will have created a wonderful sense of acheivement for this gent.

Today we had another ‘Magic Moment’ - what we call behaviour we have not seen before) during sports themed exercise therapy.

This lady usually declines to take part in activities, but today not only did she take part, she managed to do a good rally too.

The team were amazed to see this. Well done Coach Dan and our wonderful the care team.

Saturday was puzzle day and amongst other things Word Searches were quite popular.

It can often be surprising to see how well some of our residents can complete these. One resident chose to do a careers word search. He found every job listed in the search, but was surprised that engineer was not on the list. He had been an engineer during his working life.

He noticed that Roseanne, our Wellbeing coordinator, had a magnetic toolkit puzzle and asked if he could have a go with it. He identified every tool correctly and placed them on the board as he was doing so. Then he noticed there was a picture laying out the correct order for them to be placed and that he hadn’t placed them exactly like the picture. So the next minute he took them off and replaced in the correct position!

This exercise highlights the importance of making activities meaningful for people living with dementia. This gentleman was fully engaged with this activity, because it involved words and images of objects he could associate with, and would have used daily throughout his working life.
