Today our Assistant Psychologist Hannah took a resident out for a walk. She’s been working with him for a few months now and he had mentioned that he hasn’t been walking much lately.

They had a long walk which took two hours! During which they had lots of time to chat and reminisce. He talked about lots of things including his life as a pilot and his time in India. They also spoke about dogs as they saw a few dogs whilst they were out and he said he had 2 German shepherds one called Lady and the other Susie. Hannah showed him a photo of her dog and he said she should bring her along next time. They spoke about him owning Rolls Royce cars and his family. They also also spoke about the time of year it was and that Halloween was coming up on Friday, which he said he likes because of the sweets and chocolates that come with it!

When they returned he thanked Hannah and said he had really enjoyed it and that they must do it again soon.

The simple pleasures in life that we all take for granted are not always possible for our residents to have. The time spent walking today will have been hugely meaningful to this resident. They had a beautiful sunny day for it too!

One of lovely ladies wanted to show off her knitting today. So team member Lauren took her for a trip to our Home Manager’s office.

After proudly showing her latest knit, this lady enjoyed a coffee and a catch up with Mikey, our Home Manager.

We operate a ‘whole home’ approach to meaningful activities, where all our team members, no matter what their job title, are involved in making activities meaningful for our residents.

It’s going to be a fun filled ‘spooky’ week next week at Hulton House.

Our salon’s been transformed into a trick or treat room, our Jolly Trolley will be transformed and will be delivering treats around the home. We’ve got crafts, cupcake decorating, and Bingo - all Halloween themed, and we’ve also got Music and Art therapy in between. As a special treat we’ve also got a Halloween themed visit from Zolab too.

It’s going to be ‘spooktacular!’

We’re also having an inter-unit fastest mummy wrapping competition and a Halloween themed fancy dress competition on Friday with prizes for our winning team members.

In 1:1 sessions today one lady wanted to do some quizzes, so Wellbeing Coordinator Roseanne created a Halloween riddle and played the matching memories with her.

Roseanne said it was lovely to hear this lady’s memories as she loved knitting, drawing, and used to go to art galleries.

It’s not always possible to do exactly what you want, when you want to do it when you live in a care home. We recognise this and this is exactly why we run 1:1 sessions as part of our weekly plans. These sessions are so important for promoting freedom of choice and meaningful activity for our residents.

One of our lovely gents has just returned from a stay in hospital.

In today’s 1:1 sessions Wellbeing Coordinator Roseanne, noticed his feet needed some TLC, so she got the foot spa out and gave them a pamper. Afterwards she dried and moisturised them with some lovely foot cream. Our gent really enjoyed this and felt very relaxed afterwards.

It’s always the little things that mean so much to our residents.

Last week’s Art Therapy session was Diwali themed and we produced this fabulous piece to add to our gallery and become a focal point for our Diwali celebrations.

Residents were really engrossed in creating this pice. They put in some amazing details demonstrating some amazing fine motor skills and ability to concentrate. At the end of the session one of the gents even helped to wash the paint brushes!

Yesterday we celebrated Diwali, the festival of light. To mark the occasion Jenny gave a fabulous performance of Bollywood dancing.

We all loved this. Our residents particularly love live music and dancing and this was no exception. They were clapping along and copying her hand gestures. Several residents even got up to dance with some of our team members too.

Our Music Therapist Debbie conducted a 1:1 with a resident while this performance was taking part, beating along to the rhythm with a drum, which made this a very immersive session for him.

What a treat this was!
