The basic function of the psoas is as a hip flexor, it draws the thigh upwards, bending your leg at the hip to initiate a step when you walk.
The psoas is balanced by the muscles of the lower back -the erector spinae. When the psoas is tight these muscles cannot work as intended and become weak.
The posas is also a support structure stabilising the spine and also influences the tilt of the pelvis.
To release the psoas lie on your back with your knees bent at a 45 degree angle and your feet hip width apart flat on the floor , head at centre with forehead roughly level with the chin, arms by the side of the body, spine neutral. Let gravitydo the work of releasing the psoas. You can hold this for 10 to 20 minutes.
