Our Doctor, Doctor project has preserved 130 years of memories of healthcare from the Lostock Hall area. It includes a celebration of doctors who have come here from overseas over the last 75 years. In 1948 Dr William Colin-Thome, arriving from Sri Lanka (Ceylon), set up a practice that continued until his retirement in 1977. He is still fondly remembered by many in the community. His son, Professor David Colin-Thome OBE, became a well-known doctor and lecturer in the Northwest of England.

With Remembrance Day approaching, the practice reflects on Dr Sydney Sharples who ran his practice at our Dardsley building until his death in 1948.

A photograph below, courtesy of Gillian Bennett, shows Sydney in his uniform as a Captain in the Royal Medical Corp before he left for France in September 1915.

Sydney was the second President of the Lostock Hall branch of the Royal British Legion and held this position for eight years. There is a local story that Sydney attended meetings of the British Legion regularly and was known to carry a fellow ex-soldier, paralysed due to a shell injury in his back, up the stairs of the Tardy Gate pub so he could attend them too.
On his death he left a legacy of £300 which they used to buy the land the club occupied and still does to this day. He was also involved in the creation of the local war memorial which was unveiled on 20 December 1948.
