Muscle remodeling and how sports massage can help.
There are three main phases in the process of muscle regeneration;
✔️A destruction phase - where there is the initial inflammatory response. Occurs a few days after injury.
✔️A regeneration phase - with activation and proliferation of satellite cells. Occurs 4 to 5 days post injury but peaks at 2 weeks
✔️A remodeling phase with maturation of the regenerated myofibers. Around 4 weeks after injury.
Minor muscle injuries, such as strains, heal spontaneously, severe muscle injuries form fibrotic tissue that impairs muscle function and lead to muscle contracture and chronic pain.
So how does a sports massage help?
Massage will help your muscles heal- by breaking up congested areas and allowing a flush of blood with the release of pressure.
This increase in blood flow to muscle tissue feeds your cells both oxygen and nutrients.
Massages can reduce inflammation and ease pain and prevent further injury- by aiding new blood to push through your arteries and veins and also moving stagnant fluid through the body.
By stretching the muscle and releasing tension- Physically, the massage lengthens your muscles as you relax, which gives them a nice stretch. Chemically, those endorphins allow you to relax, which helps to reduce all that built-up tension in your body.
