📚 Books That Shape My Practice

“I’m fine… I just overthink absolutely everything, avoid my feelings, and spiral at 2am - but other than that, I’m totally fine.”

If this sounds like you then that’s exactly why ‘Maybe You Should Talk to Someone’ by Lori Gottlieb should be on your bookshelf 🤗

What I love most about this book is how it gently (and hilariously) reminds us:
• You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy
• Even therapists need therapy (yip, really!)
• Growth can feel uncomfortable… but also incredibly freeing

It’s honest, relatable, and full of those “oh wow, that’s me” moments we usually try to avoid.

And here’s the thing: insight is powerful - but real change happens when you have the space to explore it safely, with someone who gets it.

If this book resonates with you, it might be a sign - not that anything is “wrong” with you - but that you’re ready to understand yourself on a deeper level.

Therapy isn’t about fixing you. It’s about helping you make sense of your story and move forward with more clarity, confidence, and self-compassion.

If you’ve been thinking about starting therapy, this could be your nudge. I’d love to support you when you’re ready. Let’s talk 🤍

📚 Books That Shape My Practice

The Whole-Brain Child - Daniel Siegel & Tina Payne Bryson

“Children become the stories we tell them.”

When I work with children experiencing anxiety, the work is never just about the child.

It’s about helping them make sense of what they feel -
and helping the adults around them understand it too.

Because anxiety isn’t something to be “fixed”…
it’s something to be understood, held, and gently reshaped.

With the right support, children don’t just feel less anxious -
they begin to feel more in control, more confident, more themselves.

But they can’t do that alone.

Parents are such an important part of the story.

Because the words we use, the meaning we give,
and the way we respond…
becomes the story they carry about who they are.

And that story really matters.

Drop the Ball : Tiffany Dufu

Early in my work with women, I kept hearing the same story in different forms:- the intense pressure some of us feel to do everything perfectly.

Perfect partner.
Perfect mum.
Perfect daughter.
Perfect professional.
Perfect organiser of everyone else’s lives.

Reading Drop the Ball shifted something for me. Dufu challenges the idea that women must carry the entire mental load and instead explores what happens when we let go of perfection and control.

This has shaped how I work with women around burnout, invisible labour, and unrealistic self-expectations.

Sometimes the therapeutic work isn’t about helping someone do more.

It’s helping them realise they’re allowed to do less.

Takeaway line I often think about:

“You don’t have to do it all — and the world won’t collapse if you drop a few balls.” 😉

As I transition back to private practice, alongside some organisational work, I’ll be sharing some books that have shaped my practice.

📚 Books That Shape My Practice

One book that has significantly influenced my thinking is The Boy Who Was Raised as a Dog by Bruce D. Perry and Maia Szalavitz.

A key learning for me from reading this book very early on in my career is that context matters.

Children’s behaviours make sense when we understand the experiences, relationships and environments that have shaped their development. What we see in the present is often an adaptation to what they have needed to survive.

For me, this reinforces the importance of moving from “What is wrong with this child?” to “What has this child experienced?”.

Trauma-informed practice requires us to hold the whole context of a child’s life in mind - because behaviour is often communication, not simply a problem to fix.

I’m working on some modules to introduce as part of my in-school work supporting young people in realising their potential. Sir Ken Robinson’s key messages and philosophies feature heavily. Whether you have children/work with them, or not, I recommend watching his highly acclaimed TED talk ‘Do schools kill creativity’. His writing has been described as a love letter to human potential and a rallying cry to revolutionise our systems so they nurture creativity, collaboration, diversity and imagination allowing our children to thrive. What an impact he has had in helping me to find my Element (1950-2022) # educationreform
