I’m working on some modules to introduce as part of my in-school work supporting young people in realising their potential. Sir Ken Robinson’s key messages and philosophies feature heavily. Whether you have children/work with them, or not, I recommend watching his highly acclaimed TED talk ‘Do schools kill creativity’. His writing has been described as a love letter to human potential and a rallying cry to revolutionise our systems so they nurture creativity, collaboration, diversity and imagination allowing our children to thrive. Following the success of my Exam Stress Workshops I’m now offering 1:1 sessions for young people in the run up to exam season. We’ll follow the (no) ‘PROBS’ framework focussing on Preparation, Resilience, Optimism, Behaviours & Success. Recent advances in neuroimaging tools have resulted in researchers being able to ‘see’ experiences of relationship and emotion in the brain. Neuroimaging has found that measurable structural changes occur within the brain as a result of interpersonal and cognitive therapy. These research findings confirm what many therapists have empirically demonstrated for decades now: that counseling within a healthy therapeutic relationship supports positive change in individuals. Dr John J. Ratey tells us that ‘experiences, thoughts, actions and emotions actually change the structure of our brains…indeed, once we understand how the brain develops, we can train our brains for health, vibrancy and longevity’.
