Childhood Sleep Issues
Insomnia in children can often be different from insomnia in adults. We grown-ups have a lot on our minds that can keep us awake. Babies and even some toddlers are just beginning to develop their circadian rhythms and are not consciously awake because of a big meeting in the morning or a growing list of to-dos. Indeed, they just need a little nudge in the right direction.

Let’s examine four different scenarios of bedtime difficulties and four different homeopathic medicines that can bring order to bedtime chaos.

Joette Calabrese, Practical Homeopathy®, Put Your Kids to Bed: 4 Remarkable Homeopathic Remedies for Getting Kids to Sleep Through the Night
1. Chamomilla 200C
For the fractious, irritable child, Chamomilla 200C (employed twice daily until very much better) has historically been shown to calm the child, allowing them to fall asleep more readily when bedtime rolls around.

This child may be particularly sensitive to pain. Consequently, Chamomilla would be a first consideration if the child is teething. If none of these keynotes exist, then Chamomilla is probably not the correct remedy.

2. Nux vomica 30C
Sleep issues can often arise in children who have been exposed to conventional meds. Even if the child has not been subjected to their own OTC drugs or prescriptions, the pharmaceuticals used during pregnancy and delivery can also have a lasting effect on the unborn child.

Nux vomica 30C (employed twice daily until very much better) can help clear out those problems caused by exposure to meds. Other keynotes to watch for (aside from difficulty getting to sleep) might include waking between 2-4 a.m., a short temper, and, perhaps, constipation.

3. Coffea cruda 200C
Coffea is another homeopathic remedy to consider for overstimulation from meds. However, the overall picture is slightly different. The child can go to sleep initially, but wakes up. Goes back to sleep, then wakes up. Over and over. It’s not that they can’t go to sleep; they just can’t stay asleep.

If the child is nursing, this pattern can also result from Mom drinking coffee, eating chocolate or other stimulating substances. This child will appear busy, busy, busy during the day, and perhaps a bit nervous or anxious. Unlike the other remedies discussed here, Coffea 200C would be utilized once a day, before bed.

4. Pulsatilla nigricans 200C
This child is sweet, yet can be described as clingy and maybe even needy. At night, she wakes up feeling forsaken. “Where is everybody? Why am I all alone? Where’d everyone go?” This child needs affection and attention, so bedtime is difficult for them.

Don’t read too much into this, but if this sounds like what you’re witnessing, Pulsatilla 200C (used twice daily until very much better) can ease the child’s separation anxiety, allowing them to sleep through the night in their own bed with comfort.

Remedies for Winter Colds
Often, the reason we catch colds/flus is because our immune system has been weakened and it is in this weakened state that it is not able to resist the onset of the infection
Most practitioners today believe that a lifestyle which includes a balanced diet of fresh fruit, vegetables and good quality protein and fats with regular physical exercise is better than a diet high in processed foods and a sedentary lifestyle. Smoking and alcohol in excess also reduce the ability of your immune system to fight off infection. However, even with the best diet and a relatively stress-free life, we will, all of us, inevitably catch a cold or the flu.
So, how can homeopathy help? Here are four remedies that are regularly prescribed for winter ailments:
Aconite
One of the remedies most frequently used in winter is Aconite and it is usually recommended when symptoms of a cold come on suddenly, typically after exposure to a dry chilly wind. There may be a severe headache, which is often described in terms of fullness, or heaviness and may be centred on the left temple and is usually throbbing in nature. The face is typically flushed, hot and red with dry, sore and bloodshot eyes. The throat is normally red and dry with a sensation as if something were “stuck in the throat”. From this, it may be understood that these symptoms of heat and dryness, affecting the left side of the body, with an acute sensitivity to cold winds or draughts are those which may be successfully treated with Aconite.
This remedy may also be used to treat a painful, dry, hacking cough which manifests itself with a feeling of tension and pressure in the left side of the chest.
Gelsemium
A remedy that is recognised and accepted for use in colds which is made from yellow jasmine. The symptoms for which this remedy is ideally suited are feelings of weakness and a trembling sensation in the legs and an all over tiredness. Also, it is very beneficial for people who feel apathetic, lethargic and who want nothing more than just to lie quietly, undisturbed. The tiredness that lingers after flu, or a similar viral infection, responds well to Gelsemium. Many sufferers of these types of illnesses describe a headache as if a very tight elastic band has been put around their heads and again this common, but distressing symptom, may be helped by this remedy. Whilst Aconite suits patients who feel hot and burning, other patients who experience shivers and chills, accompanied by deprivation of sleep caused by the mind being unable to relax will do well with Gelsemium.
Allium Cepa
This is a homeopathic remedy that has proved itself in the treatment of a simple cold which presents with a nose that is sore and constantly drips and with eyes that water. As this remedy is made from red onion, it should be no surprise that the symptoms which are induced by exposure to it are those which the remedy can help to alleviate. The top lip of the mouth can become red and sore, and sneezing is a major problem. A further symptom is an annoying tickle in the throat which is usually very sore and accompanied by a hoarseness of the voice. For these symptoms and a hacking, tickling cough, Allium cepa will probably really help.
Euphrasia
By now, almost everyone will be aware from experience that with almost two hundred recognised rhinoviruses, the symptoms, although generally similar, have subtle variations; a running nose may be the predominant feature of one, whereas a blocked nose may be the symptom of another. One virus may produce a sore throat and another a mild but burning earache and it is because of these subtle variations that the homeopathic remedies that are recommended also work in slightly different ways. An example of this is Euphrasia, also called eyebright, which in many ways works like Allium cepa, with the difference that this is suggested for an infection that inflames and reddens the eyes, accompanied by catarrh. Other annoying and distressing symptoms which are associated with flu and cold-like viral illnesses are painful joints and aching muscles which can be debilitating. Whilst the remedies discussed so far will all help in some way to alleviate these, when they are severe, Eupatorium perfoliatum is recommended.
Choose the remedy above that most closely matches your symptoms and purchase it in a 30c potency. Take 1, 3 times a day for 3-7 days and stop when your symptoms are markedly better. If you are unsure always check with a qualified homeopath.

Useful Remedies to Consider for Anxiety Support from Chantry Health
Aconite – this is the remedy for people who have feelings of pure panic. Their fright might have been triggered by a shock or bad experience. Their anxiety feels immediate and intense, and they may feel as if they are going to die, that they will not survive. These feelings can happen at any time but may be much worse at night – the four o’clock in the morning meltdown!
Argentum-Nitricum – a good remedy where someone is worried and anxious, but not terrified. This can be around an upcoming event or journey for example. There may be a fear of heights, flying or claustrophobia. They can be the sort of person who does things quickly, rushing around in a hurry. When they feel nervous, it may give them diarrhoea.
Arsenicum-Album – this remedy comes to mind when someone feels anxious, needs company and a lot of reassurance. Their worries may be varied and immediate, or concerning bigger issues such as their health. They may be restless and find it hard to settle. This is another remedy where night times may feel much worse.
Gelsemium – this can be supportive when someone has anticipatory anxiety. That exam or dentist’s trip looming in the future. Or it may be that they have been thrown into a state of anxiety after a shock or bad news. They may feel wobbly and shaky, and can have that “rabbit in the headlights” feeling of being paralysed by fear.
Lycopodium – this is another remedy that can help to support someone when they have anticipatory anxiety. There may be a really strong sense of dread around a particular event such as giving a speech or presentation, perform on stage, take a test, etc. A situation where they may feel at risk of being exposed, getting it wrong, failing. Although once they are in that situation they perform well. They may find these nerves can go to their stomach and they may feel butterflies or have an upset stomach beforehand.
How to Take Remedies for Support with Anxiety
You can find some homeopathic remedies for anxiety at your local independent health food shop. They often stock remedies in a 6c or slightly stronger as a 30c. You can start with a lower strength, taking it two, three or four times a day depending upon how you feel and how you respond. It is best to start gently and build up to the level you need to help you. You can increase the strength and frequency if you feel you need a little more support, and reduce the dose, or stop, when the remedy is needed less or not at all.

Just as choosing the remedy is very individual, so is the dosage regimen. You can alternate remedies and use combinations. You can tailor it to what works best for you. Homeopaths and homeopathic pharmacies will have access to, and work with, a greater range of remedies in a wider selection of potencies than you can buy off the shelf.

Practical Support Measures
It is also important to check if you are inadvertently doing anything that is raising your anxiety levels unnecessarily.

For some, widely fluctuating blood sugar levels can contribute to feeling on edge, nervy or fuzzy headed. Making sure you are eating healthily, regularly and finding foods that release their energy slowly over time can help.

Coffee can also be worth considering your caffeine intake. Whilst it might not be the root cause of anxiety (unless you drink strong coffee by the bucket-load every day!) it might be fuelling feelings of anxiety. If you think it might be, don’t go cold turkey! Notch it down gently over a few days and weeks and see if you notice a difference.

Are there things you do that may exacerbate your worry levels but are just part of your daily routines that you do on auto-pilot? For example, a holiday from news media can be refreshing. Making changes like having a no TV night when you chat with your family, bake cakes, play board games, read, listen to music or a play on the radio, go to the cinema, a concert or see friends. Whatever gives you a boost and allows your system to relax and reboot.

Anxiety – Considering the Bigger Picture
Anxiety has a function. When experienced at an appropriate level to the situation and for a short period is not usually an issue. Self-help homeopathic remedies for anxiety are one way to find some support for everyday challenges.

However, when anxiety becomes too intense or too prolonged it has implications for our happiness and health in the short and long term. Anyone who has experienced a full-blown panic attack can tell you of the sheer power of the chemicals that are released in our system that make our hearts and minds race.

It can wear us out. Our adrenal glands respond to stress by releasing a number of hormones – including adrenaline and cortisol. This is the flight, fight or freeze response. Whilst it might keep us alive in moments of real danger it is not good for us in the long run. Read more about this, and why relaxation is important for our health and happiness in my post on self-hypnosis for relaxation.

Most people will have things that worry them. However, if you feel it is more than you can manage, it can be good to explore ways to work with why you feel anxious. And how non habit-forming approaches such as homeopathy to support you.
