I attended conference. I’m still in Brighton. I voted against the offer. It’s not great - anyone can see that. But let’s consider the actions of Unison in the realms of “Real Politik”.
If Unison thought that the membership - who are in fact the Union- were strong they would have rejected this offer - along with all the other unions - RCN, Unite RCM etc. But they realise, along with the MAJORITY of the other unions, that the membership is WEAK! They see their union as a monthly insurance policy so they can get help and support when there is a problem. But the Union needs strong membership to ensure COLLECTIVE BARGAINING. The Govt knows this.
So, this is realistic, and this deal will give a pay lift to some of our poorest members. But it stores up plenty of problems to come. The next step will be that for Bands 4 and above will have their extra duty not included in your sick pay. On permanent nights? Go sick and you will suffer financial detriment!
The model of Union membership is that of servicing: we are there when the proverbial hits the fan. But the way forward is to organise and mobilise. That’s what makes us strong.
The only way to turn this around is to get involved with your branch, Vote No, and be prepared to act on your convictions. If you aren’t prepared to walk the walk and do this, accept. The branch stewards will be out and about with information.
People do not understand how powerful a collective is. And a powerful Union is due to a powerful and committed collective.
It’s up to everyone of us!
